Toyota 2AZ-FE oil consumption TSB!
My xB has had its issues, but I still consider it a quality vehicle. I didn't expect it to be 100% flawless, and if it burned less than a quart of oil in between 5k oil changes, I wouldn't be crying about it.
Still waiting on that flawless car you can buy in the xB's price range along with these flawless cars you previously owned...

AAG, there is no 100% perfect car! I never said that I owned a 100% perfect car! What I said is that this is the "only" car that I've owned that used oil in such large quanities!
Not all problems are created equal. An "A" pillar squeek is a problem, having bad parts installed from the factory which caused oil consumption is a problem. I think the oil consumption issue is a much bigger concern.
You will just have to get over the fact that I and others that burn oil just aren't going to think that bad parts from Toyota is no big deal, it is a big deal for us!
Price shouldn't be an issue with a Toyota product and quality, I've owned entry level Toyota's, 1980's, so I'm not new to Toyota or cheap cars.
I'm not concerned with changing a persons mind, this is just how my xb works and the TSB backs up this vehicle as well as many other jToyota's with the 2.4 engine.

Scion has not followed suit because it does not apply to the Scion models. The engines in the Axioms are assembled in Japan versus The same engine in the Yotas made here. :{ for some reason the U.S. factory used different rings on the pistons. They also have water pump issues.

I wonder why this thread is still going on. Anyways, I switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-20 to see if it was the choice in oil (due to weight/how thin it was) that was causing the problems. 2.5k into my oil change and I've burnt/consumed zero oil, and I drive my car in an average manner (sometimes aggressive, sometimes cruising). I have 58000 miles right now. For people that complain about oil consumption and have over 100000 miles on your car, well....that's laughable. Cars will consume oil eventually, no matter what.
There's nothing to argue or debate in this thread anyways. People either consume oil or don't.

@BlackKnight: If you feel that your vehicle is consuming more than the normal amount of oil, we would advise you to take it to your local Scion dealer so they can start an oil consumption test. If you have any further questions after the test please feel free to contact Scion directly. ^CL
BlackNight, Let us know what Scion does for you since you list your vehicle as a 2006TC and I would guess that you are past the warranty period.
2 qt. of oil burning/vanishing is normal for my 2008 xb driving mostly in the city, highway miles it uses less, but more than any vehicle I've ever owned at any mileage.
I've filled out Scions vehicle satisfaction surveys and never, ever heard back from them. I guess they just believe it's normal to use a lot of oil and didn't feel a reply was in order.
Not what I expected from a Toyota vehicle, but I guess times have changed.

My 2010 has seen nothing but Toyota 0W20 since day one and has consistently consumed 1/2-3/4 qt every 5k since day one. It now has ~55k. I recently rented a 2012 and while I had it the maint light came on. It was at 10k so I knew it was due for its second oil change. Just out of curiousity I popped the hood and checked the oil and it was about 1 quart low. Seems like the 2010-2012 still consume.
2010SWxB, That is exactly what I experienced with my xb until I hit around 64k, then it consumed more and more oil. Toyota's TSB on this says that Toyota will fix the oil consumption if you are within warranty 60k and consume 1qt of oil in 1200 miles I believe. I still don't consume 1 qt every 1200 miles, so I believe it's normal per Toyota.
I just check and add every 1k miles so it doesn't run low of oil.
Scion has my number if they would like to discuss this from my survey I mailed to them. 85k miles now, hoping for 100k and I'll feel lucky!

What year do you have?
One thing that can cause high oil loss is a stuck open PCV valve, it sucks oil vapors right into the intake from the crank when you back off the throttle. I would check that first, then for any oil leaks on the ground where you park as well as on the engine.
2010SWxb. I have a 2008 xB I bought new and have changed the oil and filter every 5k.
I changed the PCV valve (didn't help) and the car doesn't leak any oil. I used 5/20 oil per Toyota until 70k and then switch to 5/30 oil to try and slow down the oil loss. Since I have to keep oil on hand to add I have been changing my own oil/filter for the last 20k or so, before that it was the dealer.
The TSB states that Toyota had some problems with the piston/rings in some model years with this engine and the result is using more and more oil. I believe that the owners manual states that you should check the oil when you fill up with gasoline, which turns out to be some great advise.

Wow glad I am not using oil in xb ... At the first change at 3800 miles I put Synlube in it 5w50 non-petroleum lubricant and I've added maybe half a quart in the 50,000 miles since. I am due for a filter change since the last one was three years ago although the recommended filter change was 75k per filter the outside starts breaking down if you don't drive enough so it's recommended to change it every two years.
In the roughly 2.5K miles I've had my 77K mile '08 xB2 (in the group of concern, as I recall, which I found out the day after I purchased it) I've burned 1/2-3/4 of a quart of oil in mixed driving that delivers city mileage unless I'm lead-footing it some here and there, then it drops to about 20.X mpg. (I believe that more spirited driving would increase the oil consumption. Correct me if I am wrong.) While I don't think such performance is totally horrible, it certainly doesn't thrill me, either. Tonight I added a half-quart of Rotella T Triple Protection 15W-40 to see if this has the beneficial effects some others have reported. Time will tell.
It depends where the oil is leaking, if in a surface subject to intake vacuum then light engine load would use more oil and highway driving at steady speeds would use less. Rings are in this category but they also would leak more at higher rpms. Of course with the catalytic converter cleaning up the exhaust gases you can't tell when it's smoking to know when its burning oil.
