Angry Air filter housing (air box)

Dang me! The first time I went to check on the condition of my 2012 Gen 2 xB air filter, 2 of the 3 spring clips holding that clam together snapped off the lower plastic housing under very little pressure. No way to fix it, other than a hack using 3" screws. Replacement air boxes are as rare as hen's teeth, in low-mile condition. Mine probably got brittle and fatigued driving in the heat on L.A. freeways for 10 years before it came my way. Looking for a Gen 2 air box, can anybody help?

I had to go to Jalopy Jungle and get one. It had 2 good clips/springs which was better than my 2 bad ones. They are definitely flimsy and I’m going to keep checking the bone yards for one in perfect shape.

Finally decided to go the TRD Box route. What do you think?

Hey Cannonierd….any pros/cons going the TRD route? Is the box or fastening clips any stronger than OEM? One positive I can see is accessing air from somewhere other than the engine compartment has to be beneficial. Plus getting rid of the 3-4ft of tubing! Never understood the reason for that!

What I did was I bought an airbox from a salvage yard and I was going to be just ok with that. Then I came accross a YouTube channel “Oil and Gears” I think it was where he upgraded his airbox to the TRD one and said if you bought the pieces separate instead of as a kit it would be more than half off and that’s what I did. So far I haven’t had any issues. I’m going to guess it will be no different I mean we are talking about 12 year old plastic after all. I got so many leaves caught up in mine because of the broken clips that it got into the cabin filter and messed with the vents in the car. Recycle air was blowing kinda weak till I blew out the vents.
