Dead Left Speaker?
Maybe its upgrade time? Scion/Toyota wires the front speakers differently from most speakers are: signal to tweeter then branching off to the woofer (actually it's full range). Turn the balance all the way left and the fader full front and play something. If you get sound out the tweeter, then the woofer is blown or disconnected. Try to hear if there is anything coming out of the woofer; hiss or background noise. If there is a little noise/sound, then it means the HU has an issue.
Am wondering if there is an issue with the factory units. Dealer had an 08 radio in my RS 7 when I picked it up. Radio didn't sound right. Went back and they found out it was the wrong one. Installed 10 model. Thought it sounded great till friend ask why rear speakers werent working. If I set it to fade R5 I can hear some sound but it is dull. Go to R6 and I lose most of the front volume. Having it checked next visit to dealer. Don't know if they disconneted battery when switching units or not.

You have near ear level tweeters in the front augmenting limited range low door speakers, you have even more limited speakers in the low rear doors without tweeters and upholstered obstacles between them and you -- dull is normal.
True: But I was in the back and had my son fading it back to the rear. Useless as they are. My first gen XB sounds much better in the rear. IMHO
