No thats very helpful. I had a single 10" MTX Sledgehammer driven by a 500 watt mono 2ohm amp in my last ride. It's was rediculous despite it being in the trunk. Having the sub inside the cab with me under the passenger seat is going to definatly mean i wont need near the set up I had before.

I'm thinking that I'd pair that speaker up with a 350 watt monoblock if i could find one at a good deal. That should provide more then enough power for peaks ;)

350Wrms should do it! It doubt that any shallow 10" will hit nearly as hard as your 500W MTX 10" but life is full of compromises, ain't it? Speaking of compromise, I've yet to find any 10" sub that doesn't want at least .5cf of box volume. Sure, some can 'work' with as little as .3cf but it's never ideal. Since the biggest box that fits well under our seat is ~.3cf, I wonder if an 8" sub might not be a better choice. I think I'll try that next time but for now I'm satisfied with what I've got.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Fred, what is the volume of your current box? My dad emailed me a rough sketch of the area under the seat, and I drew up a few boxes that would fit I beleive. Closest volume I got to .5cf was .48cf. But I used 1/2 MDF for that box, which I know is not recommended, but with wood glue and slot everything together it should work fine.

But I won't find out till I get home the 21st and start cutting poster board.

My simple 6-sided box is made of 5/8" MDF, has a volume of .3cf and barely fits, while allowing the seat to slide. IMO you could make an up-firing box as large as 12"x14"x6.5" (.455cf) fit after relocating all of the underseat wiring and sensor. I'm allowing ~1" of clearance for the driver and (recommended) grille on top and enough room in the rear footwell for up to size 10 feet. You could increase the 14" dimension if you're willing to sacrifice rear footwell space and you might even get away with 7" of box height, while retaining seat slide functionality.

To get the most box volume possible you'll need to use tapered or better yet, staggered dimension sides to clear the seat-slide mechanism/rails. I can't envision getting much more than .3cf from a down-firing box but possibly as much as .5cf from an upfiring, complex dimension box that requires seat removal to install.

Good luck and please post your results.

I plan to make it work one way or another. But if I can't get something to work, I am going to go for the area to the right of the tire.

I will post a pdf of the autocad drawing if I am successful.

I was thinking that a stacked box on box design would provide maximum volume. IIRC, you could go as wide as 18" under the seat rails for the bottom portion. Just to speculate, because I'm not positive that this would fit, but if you went 18" x 12" x 4" for the bottom portion and 12"x12"x3" for the top portion you'd get a volume of .5cf using 1/2"MDF.

Looking forward to your results.

Depending if you wanted to move the seat foward/back, you could do a trapazoid shaped box.

I think being even able to downfire them would work too. I was bored yesterday and started drawing in Cad. Just sucks I am still in Iraq and can't physically do anything 'yet'.

using sq10's, you could make a box 11 1/4"x11 1/4"x6 13/16" =.498cf

editfred) I just reread your responses above and I must of been sleeping. You have given me all the info I have been needing.

I'm no expert but AFAIK you should have a bare minimum of 1" air space in front of a down-firing driver and eD recommended 1.5". One more possible way to max box volume would be to flush-mount the driver by adding a ring to the inside of the MDF panel. I think you'd gain more than you'd lose by doing this.

Anyway, I wish you success with this and hope you get home from Iraq safely.

...just wanted to chime in and say that I'm glad more and more people are making things happen. It was just a couple months ago that we had virtually no options as far as stealth subwoofers.

I also wanted to add that I tried my sub (pictured on page 2 of this thread) down-firing. It seems like it hit harder, but the sound quality suffered, It didn't sound accurate. I put it back facing up and added a littele polyfill (following the 1 lb/cu ft rule). I never really noticed a difference in larger enclosures but I think it actually helps with my setup. The4 bass seems rounder and larger now. I've become pretty happy with what I've got. I like having a box that sits between the humps and doesn't impede seat movement.

I've been looking at the eD 9kv.2. Seems like a nice 8" woofer. Maybe I'll try one out someday. I've been bitten by the bicycle bug so my time and wallet has been divided lately though.
