I went on my second road trip with my xB (2010). This time I went hiking a bunch and slept in the car. I had the back row seats down and had just a few comforter blankets laid down and slept in the back.
This was obviously not the most comfortable but I made it work. The next road trip I take I wanna make sure I have a bed whether inflatable or cushioned to bring with me.
Attached is the setup I had for the road trip. Again just a thick comforter blanked folded where I’d lay, and I tucked in the excess of the comforter in area that falls in between the seats and the back.
So it didn’t really hurt my back or anything.
Slept in the not folded down backseat more than I few times (Pontiac); this looks luxurious by comparison but I didn't know any better at the time. In some ways I envy the adventure you are enjoying.
Since you are camping; you probably have access to an inflatable mat. I think that would work well. If you need more perhaps a twin "topper"
I'd go either inflatable or do a thin memory foam mattress. Inflatable with weigh much less and compacts done a lot smaller. Memory foam will be more comfortable, warmer and all around better but will weigh quite a bit more and be really bulky.

Problem with inflatable is, it probably will go past the dimensions from the length of the back of the front seats to the back door?
