I want to make a fiberglass sub box for a rear corner.
I've seen several tutorials on the web and it looks like fun.
What's the right stuff to use? where do I get it?

They had Bondo mat and resin at Walmart, but I'm guessing
there's better stuff to be used...

I didn't see anything at Lowe's except a boat repair kit,
but I didn't know where to look.

any experts around?

 

Tin foil to lay down to protect your plastic and carpet, get that from walmart. I'd get masking tape and lay that down first, as well. Then do the tin foil. I'd hit the tinfoil with some light spray adhesive, you can probably get that from walmart, too. Then lay down fiberglass cloth. You can get it at most auto body supply stores. Or if you prefer mail order, www.tapplastics.com or www.uscomposites.com/. Both seem to be good sites to purchase from. I've yet to get anything from either, but I'm sure I will in the future.
Of course get some MDF for the speaker mounting. You'll also need some fiberglass resin. You can get that from the above mentioned sites, too. You'll need some polyester fleece, too.

anything w/ a Bondo label should be the same. I think walmart carries it, Home Depot definitely does, and large quantities at that (should be in the Paint section - for some reason EVERYTHING is in that section), and auto stores definitely do.

MDF I got from Home Depot.

the service is great. there was a small mistake with my first order

The products are far superior to anything available locally and just as cheap
as Bondo products.

excellent howtos, lots of pics, many experts willing to help.

BTW- don't bother using spray adhesive on objects that you'll saturate with resin.
The resin disolves the adhesive.
for mat or cloth, just use smaller pieces, the tension from the liquid resin should
be enough to hold it in place, even upside down.
for fleece/fabric, use CA glue from a model airplane store.


most important for complete n00bs like me!!!

1) listen to the people that have done it many times
2) practice with the wood work or new tools first
3) practice a couple small odd fiberglass shapes first

(I did the first tip, wish I did the second two)

coming along good. always glad to see someone who's not scared to just start working. can't wait to see it done. I do like how you're working against the right side, might have to steal some of those ideas. just, i need something much smaller.

 

I think it takes up just over a third of the cargo area.
If I screw up and start over it will be narrower.
I was afraid I wouldn't get enough volume.
it'd be better to go taller if needed maybe.....

I like what an old body Xb guy did on the same forum with the sub
way high and in the center over the amp with satelite 6x9s on either
side facing forward behind the headrests.
