charcoal/vapor canister
hey everyone
checked the canister myself, very easy to take off by the way. I looked at all the lines and connections, and couldnt see any problems. Also the canister itself was not damaged in any way. So i reinstalled it and reset the computer by unhooking the positive battery terminal. Well the CEL went off as well as TC light. It lasted about three days before they came back on. So i am going to buy the canister from parts.com and replace it myself. Instead of paying 903 dollars for toyota to do it. Also there is a valve or solenoid that is attached to the canister that can be removed. Does anyone know if you can buy this seperate or is it sold as one piece with the canister? According to toyota it is all one piece, or sold as one piece. Still dont know why the airbag light is on. I have had several people tell me that it is a seatbelt problem, havent had a chance for anyone to look at it.
alright thanks

The Charcoal canister has a purge valve, it sounds like that is what you are talking about. A picture would help, however there usually one piece with the canister. Dont rule out a bad canister yet. Check the lines running down the firewall in the engine bay that run to the rear of the vehicle. Check all connections. Use the underhood emissions label for a reference guide. Tell me the codes you are getting and i could look them up on all data or on demand for you.

Is there any possibility the problem is associated with over-filling the tank? You never responded to that hypothesis. (Not a question of assigning blame, but purely from the standpoint of identifying the problem.)
Evaporation Canisters should not be casually keeling over -- if you understand me.

The problem would lie within the canister and valve itself. The chance of it being damaged physically would be rare unless you accidentally drove over something and managed to hit it.
Most likely there is an internal problem or like was previously stated, the tank was overfilled(clicking the fuel filler until you can't possibly get more in the tank)
The list on that canister is $698.00. If you can do it yourself and get a discount on the part then you could potentiall save over 200 dollars on it.

I still say you have a vent or purge valve problem. 95% chance. They get sticky in cold weather. A tech can run a valve test and prove it. Could save you hundreds of $$$. BFD do you already know that the valve is only available with the canister? Very unusual for Toyota to not have the valves available seperate. I think we replaced about 4 sets of valves last week that were sticking. In almost 9 years, we have replaced 2 or 3 canisters, and only 1 was on a Toyota. Her's was soaking wet due to constant over-filling. Just saying....

nater what year, model, mods, and, more importantly, mileage?
Typically smog parts do not fail for a very long time...
smog parts are required to have very long warranties, and to be fully serviced by dealers. Normally you would not be denied service unless you tampered with the component itself, or you are heavily modified (still they have to prove that was the cause of the problem)
I would think that all you'd have to do is ask the dealer (service manager) what is involved in the repair.
IMHO, you have to replace the whole unit.

And a hand held [25 dollar] vacuum pump.
The vacume part of the test is precautionary proffesionalism, but if you
hear a "CLICK" when hooking up the batt to the selinoid, 99% chance the
valve system is good. The battery "click" test can be done on a pair of
[GOOD] jack stands. The vacuum test, fraid not, need a lift unless your
skinny and can remove the canister unit. %$#@!!! Spare tire well in the
way, I have a P0456 error code and am about it, but there is also a
cross reference canister from another foreign auto 75 bucks, and a
modification to retro fit your control valve to work on it, Occasionally a
control valve pops up on ebay but that's another story.
Google this stuff , it's easy if you "LOOK".
MAKE SURE IT'S NOT A STUPID VACUUM HOSE LEAK!!!
ALL THIS WORK WILL BE FOR NOTHING IF IT IS.
[accept the 9v battery click test].
I don't recommend any "Hack-Arounds" if your vehicle is booked at over 5
grand, just fix it right, these work a-rounds are for the fugal, like me, I
intend to drive this Scion-xB into the ground at 300k before I part with it,
so resale is NOT a concern for me. The past 3 cars I owned topped 300k
before I quit on them. Two are still running!!!
NOTICE: Some states have inspectors that look for these cheats so consider that also.
Reselling? Think about the CAR_FACTS registry also.
I love cheats and work-arounds but it's NOT for everybody.
Gotta love stick shift life expectancies on Toyota and Honda,
the American made vehicle just blew up on me when it died.
I am buying a cross referenced canister and used valve to have as a spare.
You can't get this stuff if your in a hurry. For a hundred bucks I'll have it on my garage shelf.
Think ahead, save $$$
