Default Dashboard Rattle?

Hopefully someone will know how to fix this as it is driving me crazy.

My 2008 Scion XB with 5000 miles on it has a rattle from the passenger side dashboard. If you look at the air vent to the right of the cd player, line up with that and go about 4 or 5 inches toward the passenger side, that is where the rattle is coming from. If I press in on the plastic dashboard (I think that is still considered the dashboard) in that spot, the rattle stops. As soon as I let up, the rattle immediately re-appears.

Has anyone else experienced this...anyone know how to fix it?

might be something as simple as a loose clip. you might want to check that out. if not, warranty it. save yourself the work.

I had a similar problem in the past. Took the car in and they put some felt on the rattling area and it stopped. As long as it isn't the A-pillar creaking, it is not as annoying.

I have a rattle from the left side of the dash when the a/c compressor kicks on. Any one else have this problem?

Its kind of annoying but I just turn up the radio to avoid hearing it. I refuse to go back to the dealership unless something major happens to the vehicle under warranty.

My 09 has a rattle on the right side as well. It seems to be where the dash, pillar and windscreen meet. It seems to be getting louder as I drive so it will have to go to the dealer.

I have a rattle sound, kinda like a sticky sound coming from the passenger side near the windshield. Took to dealer twice, problem still exists. This is so annoying. Have taken my car in 10 times for issues like this. A Pillar Creak, side pillar creak, now the dashboard. I wonder whats next.

i had a very similar sound and found it was coming from outside the car right where the plastic airbox (where the windshield wipers connect) seal was rubbing the windshield on the passengers side. push on the black plastic part and see if you can create the sound. if its that, lube the underside of the seal with a very light film of lithium grease. thats what i did and haven't had any problems since.

Update:

I oiled up the seal on the plastic covering that touches the bottom of the wind shield on the passenger's side. The noise is now gone inside the cabin. Thanks for the tip.

I had a rattle and it was a bolt that was just laying in the dash. Found it and I assume it was dropped and replaced by the plant.

good luck.

I also replace the 2 push clips in the cowl/wiper area, one on each end, with stainless bolt and nut. it made a difference too, now over bumps I don't get the plastic pop up front like i did before, and I used the lube too.

Open the hood, look at each end, and you will see a clip with a center dot. Use a small screwdriver and push in the dot, and the clip will come off, there are only two. One on each end.

this is the area the collects water and runs out a hole in the back. this connects the cowl to a metal brace. you will see what I mean. This area was really loose till I secured it with a bold and nut. just push in it and it rattles like crazy with that cheap clip they use.

Ahh got ya, thanks!

I took a look and noticed the cowl on the left side (passenger side) is not as flush as the drivers side, where the cowl and the plastic piece under the A-pillar meet. Found this interesting... Maybe because it's cold? I don't know. Hopefully you get what I am talking about!

Besides the noise coming from the cowl, another area I found it's coming from is the Passenger side A-pillar side airbag cover. I tapped it a few times along the full length of the cover and the noise diminished.
