Default Doing an automatic transmission fluid change?

Is it as easy as it sounds?

Pull the plug, drain it, refill through the tranny dipstick the same amount you drained? Cycle the gears and check levels while the car is on and hot?

And the fluid... Get the toyota stuff from dealer? The IV stuff... How much does that run a quart?

Thanks!

Include the filter and you got it. Some folks will go as far as to drain the torque converter too.

Well i figure I would do a simple change every 10k miles or so, and around the 3rd change drop the pan and do the filter and such.

You just buy the filter at the dealer? Does it install easily?

Just confused on it because looking at same DIY's (not necessarily our car), but I never see a "real" filter. Just this pan assembly that comes out with a magnet attached to it. Is this the filter? What is the price on this from the dealer and is it easy to install?

appreciate it

How many miles do you have? I'd just change the fluid if its under 40k. Changing out the filter isn't the easiest thing (I personally hate messing with auto transmissions).

I am at like 17,500K now, I did plan on just doing a simple change around 20,000 or so, and then at 35,000, and then a pan-drop and filter change around 50,000.

I plan just to do the easy change until then, I was just curious on everything though.

My only question is why though? Are you going with a synthetic type like AMSOIL or stock fluid? Sounds like its too early, but fresh fluids is always a good thing.

Stock fluid, and I guess just because it is a "so easy, why not?" type job, lol. It isn't needed, no, but why not keep it fresh if you can. If it was more of a hassle then I wouldn't bother, but in this case, it looks really easy.

At least you are changing it, most folks do not even do that. Let along the filter too. THe filter is up in the tranny under the pan, its sometimes messy to service. Heavy duty trannys have a spin on filter off to the side. I plan on changing my fluid and filter at 5k with the endgine, although I am changing the filter at 1000 miles and doing an oil and filter change at 2500 miles.

The magnet just removes metal shavings, it too needs to be cleaned.
