Default Fuel Economy?

In their real-world tests, Consumer Reports got 26mpg overall (combo city/highway) from a tC, and in the same test got 30mpg from an xB. EPA on the tC is 23/29; on the xB 30/34.

If the xB2 is using the same engine/drivetrain as the tC, and is heavier and less aerodynamic, we can probably expect the efficiency be even less than a tC.

A $17k car that gets worse mileage than a tC is not an xB! Shoulda called it the xC.

I hope it isn't too much different in mileage...Can't wait to see one in person so I can give it my own critical eye...lol. I suspect it will be Summer before I see one here.

xC is already taken by Volvo. That's why the tC is named what it is.

I'm all about real-world mpg numbers because I too get frustrated with the EPA standards (although hopefully that'll change with the newer standards.) But Consumer Reports seems kind of at the other extreme and regularly seems to give worst-case scenario numbers that only the most lead-footed city drivers will get (at least as far as their city mileage goes; and city mileage is the one that fluctuates most.)

There has to be some standard to apply. Anything that is done outside a controlled environment will have variations that cannot be properly calculated.

They should just state "Your millage WILL vary". At least with the testing you can determine what the range of fuel economy will be. Lead foot is never calculated. However, you can take your foot out of the gas and get better economy.

That's why I was always chuckling about the people wanting more hp. More = Less MPG usually. If I had wanted a sports car I would have bought one. I wanted fuel economy without feeling like I had to take the vehicle off at the end of the drive.

Don't forget, there is alot to be done in the gearing. There could be as much as 5mpg difference depending on whether they gear for sport or travel. Maybe there is room for both?

There is, and it's called a six speed.

Manual weighs 3085lbs
14 gallon tank
No MPG

This is coming out of a Scion Official Brochure that a local dealership was nice enough to give me his only copy of, for now.

Hmmm....I get a consistant 34-35 mpg running synthetic oil/trans. Not bad for a 9sec. car.

(0-60 that is)

auto weighs 3085lbs.

what i'm thinking is that the B2 will not be geared like the tC but more like Camry before they went with the 5spd auto in the 2AZ. which means wider gearing than the tC, because people always asked if its the same engine and tranny as the Camry and it weighs 300lbs less why is getting worse mileage then the Camry. its due to the gearing of the tranny where the tC is shorter geared whereas the Camry wider geared. i think that's the reason also for the sequential shift for the B and not the D.

i have a feeling mileage will be closer to the 2002 4 cylinder auto Camry 24 city and 33 highway.

Remember that all 2008 car models will be/are tested to meet the new EPA MPG test standards. Expect the 2AZFE MPG to go down vs. previous model year (tC).
