Purchased an '08 xB with 100k miles a couple month ago with very little in the way of maintenance records. So far I have had the following performed, or have performed myself:

Oil change
Alignment
Coolant flush
(Manual) tranny fluid changed (Redline)
Air filter
Cabin Filter
Brake rotor and pad thickness - rotors look brand new, not sure if they have been replaced or turned.
Changed plugs (Denso iridium)

Any gaping holes?

The big two in terms of the engine are a compression test and checking for oil burning (which may be challenging)

 

Its a toyota 4 cyl there is nothing to worry about. Change the oil regularly and everything else you did I would have done the same. It will run 300K all day every day.

 

The 2AZ-FE has a design flaw that often leads to excessive oil consumption; it doesn't Impact all of them, but enough to be worth checking out in advance.

 

True but at the same time most motors with valve timing use a little oil. I've owned plenty of Hondas and Toyotas and they all use a little oil. I grew up always changing my oil
every 3k miles or 3 months whatever came first. I think 5k oil changes are stupid. If all you have to worry about is adding a little oil every now and then id say that's nothing.

Adding a little oil would be fine. I have to add at least 2 qts. ever 4-5k miles. That's too much oil burn for any modern engine design especially when I run synthetic.

 

its probably because you run synthetic. Synthetic oils can fit into cracks and worn seals and rings a lot easier than regular oil because of its chemical makeup. So if your rings arnt sealing running synthetic is a bad idea. smaller oil molecules=more oil is being lost.

 

I'm at about 4 qts. between oil change intervals, just waiting for toyota to call me and let me know they have the parts.

 

Got a letter in the mail last week saying my 2011 xB is now (will be?) covered for repairs if it has excessive oil consumption. So far I am not seeing a problem. I have about 80k miles, coming up on 5k miles since last change and I am down about a quart. Used 0W 20 through the winter and 5W 20 last change, full synthetic always.

As far as I can tell, the issue is caused by drain holes in the pistons that become clogged. Oil that slips past the ring(s) should drain back into the crankcase but when the holes get blocked, the oil builds up around the rings and ends up in the combustion chamber. What I don't understand is why this is happening. What is the root cause? Cheap oil? too long between changes? Using 0W 20 in the summer??? My engine is not having trouble but knowing there is a "design flaw" what should I do to reduce the chance of it happening in the future? Could oil additives or treatments help? Is this an inevitable problem that will require an engine overhaul at 120k miles?

 

No the only thing that can help is the correct pistons and rings. even if you didn't get it fixed and you kept oil in it the thing would run 300K all day long.
I had a 1995 Corolla 3 speed auto with 283000 miles. It used a quart a week and still ran like a champ. A bunch of us got the letter i made a thread on it
