Lately I've been averaging 26mph mixed driving(probably could get higher all hwy). I'm happy with it and the fact that I get twice the mpg I was getting compared to my old ride. Spending $30 to fill up compared to $60 is also nice in the wallet .

Default Gas mileage..

I bought mine mid July and have almost 12k miles on it. I drive it HARD, always have my foot to the floor when I take off, drive about 75% or more on hwy at 77+mph, brake hard, take corners fast, basically do everything I'm NOT supposed to and I average a solid 26mpg. My computer is always right on, I check the mileage regularly and its within .5mpg and within 15miles on how many mines I can go with what gas I have left. With the way I drive I'm very happy with the mpg. I'm about to do headers, exhaust and TRD intake so I'm interested to see if any of this changes....

Default Manual vs. automatic mileage?

First poster, considering '08 xB purchase for commuter car. [Don't laugh if us old guys leave it completely stock, OK?]

Being an old farm boy, I figgered that the manual transmission would give me 3-5mpg better than the automatic. Plus save me a few $$$ to start.

While the commute is mostly rural and highway, there is about 12miles/30 minutes on suburban arterials, so the automatic might be nice.

The sticker shows the same EPA numbers on both models. Is that really true in the real world--there is no mileage penalty for the xB automatic?

[Yes, I realize driving habits play a big part.]

Well it use to be that 5/6-speed manuals were better on gas mileage but now days with these new CTV auto transmissions (however you spell it) that isnt' so much the case anymore. Not sure on the xb2 since its a 4-speed auto.

Also the past couple weeks my gas mileage has dropped to 24mpg . I think the colder weather is partially to blame (my heavy foot is probably the other reason )

kudos on the tire pressure, i also have a yaris and notice a 5mpg drop when i had a nail in one tire that was slowly leaking. also the guys at dealerships are total retards (99% of the time, theres always an exception), bc all they care about is selling you stuff

The xB doesnt have a CVT transmition however the gas mileage is very comparible between automatic and manual, new automatic transmissions are much better then they used to be. Also i noticed with my 05 xB when i was doing 65 say my rpm's were at like ~4000 and the automatics at the same speed were at ~3850 or so, really helping the highway gas mileage. I could just get to 65 a lot faster then the auto.

25 to 30 mpg? Holy cow!!!

It is clockwork for me....21. I can drive good/bad/any other way and it is always the same. I did recently have my tire pressure light come on and they were all at 20-25 so that doesn't help. I will be keeping better tabs on that too.

Also, my 18s with tires are about 1/2 inch smaller in diameter than stock. So I am an idiot but does that mean it is reading low anyway? Am I going faster or slower than indicated? Sorry, noob questions, but....

Okay, I just used Americastire.com tire calculator. Looks like I am going only 1/2 mile per hour less than indicated. That means I am actually getting less MPG though. I gotta get off the gas pedal!

Timmer357 you have it backwards . . . your speedo is not calibrated to the odometer . . . if you check the odometer against a measured mile or the mile markers on the highway you should find that you are traveling further that the odometer is indicating which translates to more MPG than you calculate. Also the VVTi works best when you don't put your foot through the gas pedal, you can rev the engine a lot and still get good mileage as long as you keep the pedal in the first 1/3 of its travel towards the floor. Lastly drive like you have no brakes - back off sooner and let the engine slow you down - three things happen when you do that. 1 you get the injectors turned off so you stop burning fuel. 2 you save brakes. 3 you are moving and not burning gas making your gas mileage goes up.

21 MPG ALWAYS! I calculate every time i fill up and the car computer says 23.3mpg. I tried driving like a grandma for a couple tanks and still 21mpg. I do about 50 percent highway also. About to get my 5000mile oil/service done.
Suggestions? Will mileage increase after oil change?

Silvrxb what speed are you doing on the highways? if you are cruising over 70-75 your gas mileage will decrease, and can drop off fast. When you drove like a grandma did your car computer say your gas mileage went up? So far I along with most everyone i have talked to have seen the car computer is almost always right or very close. Do you have the factory wheels and tires? And though QT isnt know for great fuel i doubt that is the cause to your low mpg.

Sounds like your VVTi is stuck or you didn't break in the engine properly. Should go up after the oil change - they recommended 5000 for the first change?? Sounds a little bit long for break in . . . mine was 3600 dealer recommended.

I tried my best to break in the engine according to the owners manual. I do drive with cruise set around 72,73 on the highway. I have factory wheels and tires, and my trip computer is consistently about 2 mpg off. I reset it on every fill up.

Ahhhhh the price of that extra 52 HP in that bigger engine is probably the culprit. I do get over 40 on my highway trips under good driving conditions but keep in mind that I have Synlube in my engine, tranny and power steering which reduces my friction a lot. Typically I get in the low 40's at highway speeds for long trips and mid to high 40's for local below 45mph speeds like today 20 miles including about 5 miles of highway at 50mph I got 46.1mpg for the trip.

i'm still in the break in period, so rarely break 70mph and have never used my cruise control, do mixed highway/back road driving totaling ~80miles per day and am averaging 28-29mpg, though my computer says I'm getting 31-32.

Judging by the responses here, most of you are really concerned with MPG. I gotta ask, why did you buy a xB2 to begin with?? Toyota obviously dropped the ball on MPG with the 2nd gen, no??

Huh? Discussing gas mileage of a new car is pretty common, no?

I think people are "concerned" because they are getting less than the normal or "advertised" MPG...

Unless you are wealthy enough that you don't pay attention to gas prices, who isn't concerned about MPG?

So far so good here with my xB2, no surprised MPG-wise.
