For those with the 2nd Gen xB doing high speed driving wanting better mileage - the only way you can help it more is to put some better lube in the engine and tranny and try to follow big trailer trucks going fast on the highway to push some of the wind out of your way. It also helps to keep the body nice and clean and slippery with a good polish - all that air have to pass over the body so making it slick can really help at those higher speeds. Between breaking in my 06xB running Synlube in the tranny and engine, keeping it clean and polished with RejeX and pumping the tires up to 40psi I get in the low 40's at 60-65mph highway speeds very consistantly - usually a consistant 43mpg on long trips. And it doesn't drop by much at higher speeds - I just don't have many highways around where I drive that are posted higher.

got 18k miles on my 08 xb and still averaging 22 to 26 mpg this car sucks im really starting ti dislike the whole mpg with this car for the mpgs that im getting now i could of bought the pick up truck

Try Hess gas if you can - it seems to get me better gas mileage than other brands. If you have 18k already then you are doing a lot of fast driving and I would not expect great mileage. My average speed for a tank is about 25mph because of the speed limits around here but I also run some special low friction lubricants that really boost the mileage. Some of it is technique too - a trip from Newport to Logan yesterday my friend drove there and I drove back she got 52.9mpg I got 62mpg in her 2007 Prius and I hit the afternoon rush hour traffic coming out of Boston. If you have a chance to take a drive in the country try an hour of driving around South Dartmouth and see if you get higher mileage - when I get get gas at the Hess on Faunce Corner Road and drive through S Dartmouth and Adamsville back to Tiverton I get about 50mpg.

i've never reached 26mpg
i'm now UP to 19.6mpg, from the all time low of 18.9
the new GM fullsize hybrid SUVs get that mpg, with a V8 engine
and qualifies for hybrid tax credits
not that i would ever buy a GM product...

What you want to do is add up how many miles of down hills you are coasting and at what speed (to get the time) and then figure 0.2gph at idle saved in all that time.

HA ha ha no the guys at GasSavers.org have been writting and calling the owner of the ScanGauge company about it and the newest version of the SG has some compensation software the corrects the fuel shut off calculation.

damn....thats a lot man just to drive a suv you have to be rich and at least half the cars on the road today are suv's! Man if only everyone switched to more economical cars we could stop importing oil and supporting terrorism!

Next ease up on the gas pedal - brake less - if you drive like you are trying not to brake then you will save gas. Biggest savings is to back off the gas way before the stop sign or red light because all that distance you end up NOT burning any gas and slowing down and it makes a big difference on your mileage.

gas milage
I have over 11'000 mile on my xb an in the last few months my gas mileage had droped to around 20 mpg. the winter around here has been very cold with temps at 0 to 6 degs. once the temp went up pasted 33 degs my mpg went up to 27.5. the only thing that changed was the temp i drove the same route same time every day. i know the xb has a cold sensor that revs the engine to 4000 rpm till it's warm so i guess the only way to get great mpg is to move somewhere warm

If you block off the front grill your mileage will return and you will have plenty of heat in the car too. You just have to watch overheating with a real temperature gauge. I have been driving around in single digit numbers with the engine warmed up I got the typical mid 40's for MPG - it's all about keeping the entire engine and tranny warm.

personally i think hess gas sucks!!!! and i drove from fall river to logan and got stuck in traffic and only got 26 mpg i dont drive over 70 do alot of highway cant wait till the weather breaks the scion will get put away and the gsxr with 180 hp and 180 miles to a 4 gallon tank will be out

Well I get better mileage than with S&S gas and I guess I have to try some shell gas since I have a $20 gas card from christmas last year - last time I ran it in my xB I didn't notice a difference. Getting stuck in traffic is going to impact your mileage anyway and the way Boston traffic is you have to keep slamming the brakes on at 60mph - it's going to negatively impact the mileage every time. With a Prius in Friday afternoon traffic I managed 62mpg coming out of Logan so it can be done - and I didn't use the HOV lane either.
Anyone know for sure if a hyprid is allowed in the HOV lane with 1 person in the car??
