Default IPOD question

I just bought an Ipod Nano, my question is, I have the "Basic" stereo, when I plug the Ipod in, is there a way to scroll thru the menu on the ipod and choose a song instead of using the head unit for scrolling? And, does the Ipod suppose to stay on when I turn the car off? I've been upluging the Ipod from the cable when I turn the car off. Thanks for the help.

i have the upgraded HU - so if i do what Maddman says to do, will this enable me to use the ipod menu to choose songs rather than the radio HU

i hate using the HU to change songs or look for them- it takes forever and is a car accident waiting to happen!

the only way I know of is to use the Aux port instead of the iPod port, then you can use the actual iPod to scan through songs instead of the HU

I use an Auxilary port for my iPod. It's my preferred method since my head unit doesn't scroll the ID3 tag information.

umm the ipod turns off after a few moments. it is not running off the battery per say. it is running off the internal battery and should go to sleep after a few minutes depends on what you have it set as..

as for scrolling. umm head unit is the only way that i see you can do it.

VC -

I've got the basic headunit too.

Scrolling:
HU only. To make it easier I've created about 12 playlists based on different criteria (era, star rating, etc). This allows me to scroll through a smaller group of songs to find what I want.

On/Off:
Like what ibnboxin says. It depends on how you have the ipod setup. Mine shuts off after a few minutes of inactivity. I also leave it in Key Lock mode so that when I unplug it and put it in my pocket, accidentally hitting the keys doesn't turn it on and wear down my battery.
