Default Maintenance at 15k?

What exactly does the dealer do for the 15K maintenance service besides change oil and run down a safety checklist?

Also, how much is everyone paying for it?

How can I reset the maintenance light myself?

press the trip button until you get to TRIP A. then turn off the car. while still holding onto the trip button (the right button) turn the car back on.
where it used to say the miles for the odometer there will be a series of dashes that countdown. dont release the button till it finishes the countdown. there you go the light is reset

i think that if you know how to change the oil yourself it would be fine. but at a dealership they also check your pads and see if you need new ones. also they supposedly check your fluids and chassis bolts but as the tC guys found out that may not be true

Thanks Mike... really appreciate it. I'm just going to go ahead and do this myself.

You might want to replace the air filter also.

I also rotated the tires.

To reset the engine maintenance light, make sure that you are holding down the trip A button while turning the key on (only to accessory and not all the way start the car)

When using a pure synthetic oil, do you still change your oil every 5K or do you change it in longer periods (like 8K) or shorter periods (like 3K)?

I'm still running 5k oil change intervals just because I'm still under warranty. Once I'm out, I'll be running probably 7.5k-10k miles before an oil change.

I'm about 1k away from 15k and was wondering the same thing. I was just looking online at pricing and check out these 2 dealers.

My dealer (in San Diego) - $159
http://kmscion.com/Scion-Service-Pricing.aspx

Another dealer (in Oregon) - $56!
http://www.wheelerscion.com/2008-xB-...e-Pricing.aspx

The cheaper place does mention extra charges for tranny fluid, brake fluid, etc. if needed. I bet the dealer in San Diego just charges $159 and does the exact same service as the cheaper dealer. But maybe if you need your coolant and brake fluid topped off, they'll "throw it in free".

I'm curious to see what the consensus is about the 15k service. I just changed my air filter the other day because my original one was super dirty and my mileage dropped immensely (I got 22mpg for 2 tanks). That's all good now. I can change the oil and rotate my tires no problem. I doubt there should be any other needs for this car. The other items on the checklist seems kinda iffy to me.

---edited for horrendous spelling---

it doesnt matter how long your oil is rated for. if you dont have a filter that will work that distance then it doesnt matter. i can safely assume that the toyota filter is rated for 5000 miles (cause they recommend oil changes at 5K intervals using their own filters) so even though my mobil1 will last the supposed 8K i change at 5K cause thats when the filter needs to be changed

We change the filter at 5k, and drain/fill oil and replace filter at 10k. With synthetic, if that wasn't clear.

Get an AFE or AMSOIL air filter. Oiled air filters suck.

Really? My last oil change was with an m1 filter, before that an STP, and before that a Toyota OEM. I didn't really notice a difference between any of them...

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here by replying but I think oiled filters can "suck" if not properly cleaned and re-oiled. Some people can over oil them and the excess oil can muck up whatever's downstream (MAF sensor). I guess if you can do this procedure properly then oil filters can be just fine. I had a K&N FIPK in my old truck and I re-oiled it a few times. You just have to stop oiling when the filter is no longer white. It just takes a little control to not over do it.

That being said, I have an AFE Pro Dry drop in filter on its way. The less work to clean the better...

They say nothing about a "Dry filter". Do you have to re-oil it? How do you clean it?
