PLEASE, don't flame me for this. I'm entitled to my opinion and the OP did ask, and I feel I have a valid comparison.

In all the real-world xB side-impact crashes I looked at (check out www.wreckedscions.com , among others), one of two things happened:
-the striking vehicle was too short to enter the passenger cabin (as is the case with governmental side-impact tests, where the xB scored 3 stars), leading to pelvic and leg injuries but not chest / head, or
-the striking vehicle hits at an angle other than 90 degrees, bringing other parts of the safety cage into effect. Do you realize how rare an exactly perpendicular impact is? Somebody's usually slamming on the brakes or swerving. In every real crash I saw, either the striking vehicle hit at an angle, the xB was going fast enough that it skid out / rolled, or the striking vehicle also hit the A or C pillar, which helped absorb the impact. The closest real-world data I have found was an xB hit by a Blazer doing 45, and it was hit on the passengert side. The driver, of course, walked away.
Again, I consider this of insufficient statistical likelihood to determine what car I drive. If I had kids it would be a VERY different story, but that won't happen for a few years, so I don't care right now. The gen 1 xB performed better in side-impact test than many cars on the road today, and that's good enough for me.
It also bears mentioning that, at 5'7", I'm over half a foot taller than the dummies used in the infamous IIHS side-impact test, which makes it even more unlikely I will be involved in the sort of wrecking-ball-style collision that side-airbags would affect.
Also, if a semi-truck runs a red and hits you: you are going to die. Unless you're driving another semi-truck, of course.

I told him him they DID come out, A YEAR AGO, and he was surprised, saying he hadn't noticed anything of interest but the boxes like mine. That was sort of the dealbreaker for me.

I don't know, in one of the news threads here on this board, one of the dealers posted a graph charting xB sales... gen 1's peaked at about 8000 units a month, I haven't seen anything indicating gen 2's have gotten above 6k.
mind you, that's with the biggest slip in the car market in 20 years, so keep that in mind.
in any case, this was simply feedback for the original poster, so frankly i don't even know why we're talking about it. how on earth do you feel comfortable making comparisons to a car you never even sat in?

frankly, i don't know how you guys take all the random-bashing. scion must be the only car company on the planet where all the model-owners hate one another
Not exactly who you were hoping for here as I have a gen 1 and have only driven a few 2nd gen.
First off I really like the 2nd gen-I thought they were so ugly at first but the more I saw and the more modding I saw the more I liked them and I love that light blue paint they offer.
I was really impressed with the power, especially with the auto (the triptonic feature is fun but it redlines even without it)
I found out that it does not have a 5x100 pattern wheel so the tC wheels, VW Gti wheels, etc will not fit.
It is heavier and you feel it when driving hard-around town etc it still felt pretty quick and manuverable.
I never found much for DIY articles on here (including spring swap) so is it coming or aren't there as many people doing their own thing?
The motor is the same as the TC but a lot of performance mods (maybe all) do not cross over (headers, turbos, CAI, etc) so it will take some more time to get the aftermarket and cheap/good deals primed for them.
4wheel discs, bigger motor, etc-I am sure it will be fun. It weighs a lot more so as far as the go-cart, toss it around fun-not nearly as much.
Better family car no doubt-more subtantial, quieter, bigger, more hill and passing power.
If my 1st gen gets whacked I would get one-but I would not give it up just by choice as a trade in.

lol, if someone isn't going to like me because my freaking car isn't pretty enough, there's a real good chance that's the sort of person I'd despise instantly...so the box just saves me a step! :D
That's why the new Scion commercials crack me up - they're all like "like or it LOATHE it" and I'm like "c'mon, NOBODY loathes the new ones, because they're cute little baby Highlanders." i don't think i've ever met a person who doesn't think they're adorable...besides gen 1 owners, of course ;)
to each his own!
Just curious, why not look at the xD as well? It seems to retain the character of the 1gen more so than the 2gen does (smaller wheelbase, better mileage, easier to park)
I did seriously think about trading for a 2gen, my wife is disabled and I got the box for accessability. Here's my first-gen:

And the new one now being offered:

The new one allows you to keep the rear seat and even swap the front one back in when you don't have a disabled rider. Ultimately though, I had already put too much money, time and effort in 1gen mods and didn't want to have to start over. Also, I didn't want a higher car payment.

welllll, the pros of the Gen 2 are:
- more horsepower
- bigger trunk
- better safety rating (important cause I now have babies)
the cons (to me) are:
- worse gas mileage
- argh! Blind spots
- not as funky/unique looking.. I don't drive a Box anymore, I drive an Imperial Troop carrier (yes, I have a white Gen2)
- less interior room - I know, the Gen 2 is "bigger", but the freakin console takes up a ton of legroom in the front. Also, my two infant car seats fit MUCH better in the Gen 1 than my current Gen 2. Why? Have no idea... Toyota engineering..
- non tilt-able headrests in Gen 2 make me bonkers and tilt my head forward at an uncomfortable angle
my three cents (what with inflation and all) ;)

I never drove a 1st gen, but I traded my Matrix in for my xB2. I was so impressed after a test ride of about 5 miles, over a good variety of road condtions, that I was sold. Before my Matrix, I was driving a Suburban. Traded the "elephant" for the "mouse" because of gas milage and change in marital plans.... no longer needed a full-sized beast. I missed my 'burban every day, except when at the gas pump. I'm getting a bit less in fuel economy with the xB2 from the Matrix, but the room and comfort and ride make up for it. My xB2 is slightly smaller overall than the Matrix, but much roomier. Two adults can sit very comfortably in the back seats. I agree with the other posts about the arm-rest.... it's like it's an after-thought, a cheap one at that, but one thing I keep in mind is that I used to drive that 'burban, where nothing was cheap. I used to drive a cargo van, so I don't even really notice a dimenished rear visibility. My xB2 gets me onto the freeway, or just plain old up to speed, without effort, like my old v-8s did.
There are draw backs...... towing isn't allowed and a one-speed variable wiper sucks........ but again, I remember my first cars didn't have variable wipers, so I'm not complaining.
Drive a 2nd gen, drive a PT Cruiser, drive a couple of 6 bangers and some v-8s. You'll find something that fits you.
Best of luck. Let us know what you go with.
