Opinions from owners who had/have an XB1
We'll I just sold my xb2 moved, and then started looking for another xb2 used, but couldnt find any that were even close to a good deal, and then I found an awsome deal on an xD so I jumped on the xD RS1.0 bandwagon.
So now I have owned a xB1, xB2, and xD.
I have so many mixed emotions that I dont even know what I like now!?!
The xB1 rocked mostly because it had the heck moded out of it, and it was the most unique. Looking at it was like getting slapped in the face... I LOVED IT.
The xB2 was the most refined and overall I think is the best deal for your money new. But lacks in character, I never had time to mod it at all so that could have easily been fixed with several thousand dollars. One thing worth mentioning though is my xB2 was a 5speed and I got just as good of gas mileage (29.8mpg) as my xB1 (5 speed 30mpg), and almost as good as my xD (automatic 31mpg) however I have only been driving my xD in the city so far.
The xD(RS1.0)... I have only had it for 4 days now, so I wont make any solid judgements on it yet. It looks awsome but was pricey to get it that way. I actually think stock xD's are kind of ugly but the hot lava with the body kit and some nice wheels, sweet. The xD is very zippy but your gas mileage will go down the drain if you drive it like a sports car. It isnt as roomy as either xB's but is still very roomy for a small car. 75% of people think my xD looks better then either of my xB's. Gas mileage is the best out of all of my scions so far.
The verdict. I dont know. I liked them all and they were all very different vehicles all with great traits. For a small family go with the xB2 for a single young person looking for something sporty and efficient go with the xD, for someone looking to make a statement and have a mixture of both go with the xB1 (5speed) xB1 automatic = snail.
thats my 1 cent (I lost the other in the stock market.)

^^ I agree with him.
I was actually just thinking about this topic, since my brother was car-shopping, replacing an old and well-loved Saturn wagon. We went in because the xB2 was a major contender. We didn't even end up test-driving it. He bought an xD, which I really haven't paid much attention to.
I had forgotten how different the B2 is from the original. In my opinion, if you don't have kids to cart around or really ornery old relatives, there's no reason to upgrade. My bro sat in one for 60 seconds, wondered why in the hell the beltline was so high ("I feel like I'm sitting in a bathtub"), and suddenly the xD was on the short list.
Honestly, because of the xB2's gargantuan dashboard, the xD actually feels roomier. If a mini-minivan is your style, the xB2 is the way to go, but for anyone looking for a CAR-car, the xD (or the B1) is the logical decision.
So: Less is More with the xB2...if you want to feel like you're driving an SUV but still fit into half a parking space, spend your money here. The xD is more consistent with the Gen 1, but does entail sacrificing some room.
I still don't know why the hell Scion isn't selling the xB and the B2 side by side. So far I've seen about 4% overlap...everyone else likes one or the other. :p

My xB2 doesn't have the ride, the feel, my Suburban had, but I'm not paying Suburban prices..... at the dealer or the gas pump. It's a nice ride for the weight, and at the price, I'm not afraid to break it with mods.
I really liked the comments from friends who rode in the back seat this weekend.... "it's roomier than Christy's xD" .
I try to remember to call my car a "B" and not a "Box". The xB1 is a box, and a fine one at that, but they are two different cars.

I do agree though that the xB is a great choice for people coming out of their big SUV's looking for somthing a little easier on the wallet. I'm still undecided if I like the xD or xB2 more, they're just very differnt vehicles.
I just purchased an 06 xb1. I looked at the new xb....its nice....but I didnt really get it. The things that attracted me to scion was cost, gas milage, long life (being a toyota) how simple they are to work on and the goofy style. It makes me sad to see scion stop making the xb1....because no other car co. makes anything like it....on the other hand everyone makes the xb2.....in fact I think ford is making a great xb2. Sorry to say, but the xb2 it a direct result of what happens when a car co listens to to many people......"I would buy one of those box things if it had a v8", "I would buy one if it were bigger...like my mini van","The ride is rough.. Ill stick with my cady"."I like the box style.....can you make it a little less boxxy...like that dodge thing"
All these people wanted another car......not a scion.
Now their is no car in this catgory to buy.

I'll take my xB2 over the underpowered and less safe xB1 any day. Even if it means taking a couple MPG hit.
The cube maybe the answer? That we will have to see....It would have still been nice to have a choice in this class of car..toy vs nissan..Im an old school import guy, I started back in the late 70's with a datsun 510....I loved the imports, simple, light weight, cheap, great handlng...The scion line brings back alot of what made import tuning fun. I hate to see scion in such a short time making a move away from what made everyone take notice of them in the first place....the xb made scion a hit.
"Id give up gas for hp and the added safety and size? " sure you would.....you wanted another car than the xb1.....thats my point.
...what you want was already out , ready to buy before the xb2 ever came out.

I had an xa for about 2 years 25000 miles. I bought it because I needed a new car and the dealer wasnt interestted in selling me a prius. I tried the yaris hatch back, but it was too small and did not come with anything but a tranny choice and ac.
Sure the xa was small, but I am 6 foot 4 325lbs, all cars and some trucks are small to me. It had a narrow power band, was pushed around in the wind, but since its scion, there was lots of stuff out there to do to it to make it handle better and give it better power and keep the similar fuel economy.
Anyway, all those storms coming up the coast my arthridas started to act up where I broke my leg and other aches and pains that made it very uncomforrtable to get in and out, plus drive and work the petals.
I looked at the xd, but it too was small inside, like most cars and didnt like the seats. I sometimes transport my elderly parents around and their 2 walkers, which the xa did, but it was tight for everyone.
Anyhoo, tried the xb2 and i was shocked. Is this a scion? Wow, look at the leg room in the front and back, look at the trunk space. Then I find it has a very responsive tranny that upshifts as needed vs stay in high gear.
I was sold and bought one. I had a guy at work asked to see it and he too was shocked at all the room inside. Its like the room of an suv without the price or fuel consumption.

BTW, the Cube vs xB thing has already been discussed on Scion life.
See the Edmunds comparison test below:

I used to be an xb2 hater until my gf talked me into checking out a 2008 xb rs edition for her....it already had an intake, exhaust and the 19 trd wheels on it...we bought it and have not regretted it....i still have my xb1 and i love it but the xb2 has more room, power, and a nicer interior than my xb1. they are really two totally different cars and its hard to compare the two honestly.
My '04 xb was my baby. I LOVED that car.
It got totaled on the 101 fwy here in socal on oct 1st.
I can't begin to tell you how depressed I was.
I set out to get another one and was actually looking at a couple of prospects. There were a couple of show cars that I was thinking of flying out to see.
My wife kept saying, "I'm telling you, you have to check out the 2nd gen xb..."
Well, I was totally against it and told her that I had never really liked the new style.
To make a long story short...I eventually checked out the 2nd gen xb...and fell in love!
I miss my baby, and always will. The 1st gen xbs are icons, and always will be, but it was time for a change. "Been there, done that."
I love my new 2009 xb2. Change is good.
btw - anyone interested in a set of axis og old skool wheels from my 1st gen? pm me...

For one thing, I don't think the whole gas mileage difference is that large.
Scanning through the first gen xB forums, I beat 75%+ of those peoples mileage. I average a solid 29-32mpg in summer months (winter is a bit lower due to higher air density and winter fuel at around 27-29mpg). Most xB first gen don't even seem to get that too often. I don't know why, but that is just from general observation.
Some people may get 32-25mpg with the first gen, but it doesn't seem to common. But I guess you can say the same for the 2nd gen too, alot of people have trouble getting over 25-26mpg. But I think that comes down to driving habits because never have I gotten less then 26.5 or something, in winter, mostly consisted of city driving and sitting in traffic. Hell, in traffic jams I can get my avg. mpg to display 35-40mpg. You just have to drive smart and not gas, brake, gas, brake constantly, let it coast!
