Default Rain channel roof trim piece blows away! Warranty item?

I just had a brand new (1500 miles) xB RS 5 shipped to me on a truck from the midwest facing backwards on and a top load all the way to the front. It appears that the wind got under one of the black trim piece that runs on each side of the roof from the front to back and blew one of them away while the other one seems fine. The vehicle was otherwise perfect after the shipment. I don't know how much these trim pieces cost and the driver really did nothing wrong, so in my opinion this should be a warranty item. Toyota ships these things around on trucks too.

What do you think the dealer will say when I ask them to replace it?

It depends on the dealership cause it's hard to warranty a part if it's not on the car!

they absolutely should. i lost the little black cover piece on my tC next to the side view mirror, just took it to my dealership and said it was missing and had another one in a day or two.

pieces of your car just falling off is definetly a warranty defect.

You might have a problem when you tell them how you lost it. Technically the vehicle was damaged in shipping. The shipper should probably be liable.

Toyota might say the car was not designed to go backwards at 70 mph. You might get lucky and have them say you are right and it should not have come off under any circumstances. That's what I would push.

It's really not fair to the trucker. He did everything you are supposed to do and did it well. The test should be if it performed as one would have a right to expect it to under normal usage. You don't expect that these will blow off and the fact that one remains is proof that the one that's lost was not attached well and should be replaced. As was said earlier, you don't expect parts to fall off your brand new vehicle under normal usage and I would say possible shipping or towing on a truck is expected, normal usage, when do care is taken.

Is there a rain channel?
I've kind of wondered since water pours onto the seat when I open the door...
and I've forgotten to look at other cars.

Thats crazy mine fell off last week!! drivers side. It has been really hot here and when I came out to go to the store the front edge of it was sticking up. I live very close to my dealer and decided to show it to them, I barely got around the corner before it flew off. They did say they would replace it but "typically this sort of thing would not be covered by my warranty or my platnium warranty either" At least they said they would cover it. Only 4000 miles on the car if they hadnt covered it I would have been Take yours to them and get it replaced. This may become a recall thing.

Happy to report they are replacing both under warranty, since the remaining one showed signs of coming off too.

Good.

I did take a look at these and can see where they could peal up on the ends.
Out of warranty folks might consider lifting up the ends and putting some Gorilla Glue in there. There are trim adhesives at auto body supply stores, also.
I didn't know these were considered rain gutters.
I'd like to see one closer to the door edge where it could help keep the interior dry.

(Not really "rain gutters" just the seam where the roof panel is welded in, and rather than trying to make it all super-smooth door-to-door, manufacturers that have seams like that on the roof just make them part of the 'design' of the vehicle.)

The filler strip shouldn't just fall out any more than the headlights or windows are expected to fall out...

definitely should be covered under your warranty.

a similar defect was found with 1st gens, where we had the left bottom corner grille piece fall out. i personally lost mine, and the dealer covered it no problem. if it's a relatively common "defect", i'm sure toyota will recognize it and definitely cover it.

Next time I go to the dealership I'll ask them about it. I guess I should go soon since I'm past due for my 15k maintenance...

I paid $90 for a single replacement rain channel cover. Way too expensive, but what you going to do- if you need one you need one.

I have the part number so I searched and found one site that sells them for about $20 less than your Scion dealer. Also note the part number change.
