Why try and figure out how far you can push your luck?

Just plan on filling up when your light comes on, and you'll always be safe.

yeah man dont push it. you dont wanna start puttering and your far from a gas station, or you dont have any means of money on you. what i do to figure out how far i can go is just after filling up, i reset my trip A to back to 0. when its time for me to fill up again, i take the mileage on my trip A meter and divide it by how many gallons i filled up. this of course gives you your MPG, just multiply that by 14 to get a rough estimate of how far you can actually go with all 14 gallons, but i suggest to never actually find out how far you can go

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix and when the gas gauge was working, the light would come on and I'd still have five gallons left. The gauge has been broken for six years now so I always fill up at the 350 mile mark and I've usually got 3 or 4 gallons left. It's got an 18 gallon tank. She's got 221,000 miles on her now so I will be glad to have something new when my XB gets here!!

Kinda funny on these cars to have the light come on and drive for another 25 or 30 miles and see the needle far to the left of empty. Still when filled there was still almost 2 gallons in the tank. But like the saying goes. "Don't try this at home kiddies"

Some day soon when the tank is low I'll put my the gas can in the back and take the car out on the road until it goes bone dry. I've done it with every other car I've owned to see just exactly how low the fuel gauge needle goes.
