why does the 2nd gen have such a big engine?

I think there were plenty of people who test drove the first gen xB (automatic) and didn't think it had nearly enough power for average driving.

Toyota/Scion probably felt that they didn't have a choice if they wanted to sell more xB's ... particularly with the heavier body.
