Default 2014 Tein Street Advance Z Real Install Problem

Not my first rodeo when it comes to installing suspension, even on cars with a separate spring/shock in the rear.

issue I’m having is after the rear shocks are installed, I’m hearing squeaks from the shock mount inside the hatch area. I eliminated this by loosening up the top nut and lubing the rubber bump just under the large metal washer.

The noise happened again, so I checked it out and while bouncing the rear, the top nut actually moved upward somehow. Everything is still tight so I’m not sure what is going on.

With this kit, you’re to reuse the stock mounts for the front and rear, and I THINK I have the components sequenced properly in the rear. I should mention that this car had Monroe strut/shocks installed, so the “OEM” parts might not have been OEM.

also, here’s what I think I need.

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...?q=Shock&pos=9

From the top:
Nut
Large washer
Rubber bushing (1” thick)
Metal spacer (fits in the hole in the body)
Another rubber bushing.
Dust boot

Replace both left and right rear shock mounts. I've replaced them twice. First time from stock to coilovers and then the second time, pretty much wear and tear. I go over these speed bumps daily and it just wears the bushing down.
Order it from RockAuto.

maybe I need to see what the stock mounts look like. Because now they’re just a couple rubber bushings, a metal ring and a washer.

Hey Steve do you still have the install instructions from Tein? They show the correct order to install the bushings and etc on the rear end? Looks like the same setup on my tC2, I can post them after work if you wanted to check it out and double-check.

Not much to it though. Just need to make sure everything is properly torqued down back there. I think a 10mm box wrench will keep the shock body from spinning while torqueing it down.

If you're in AZ feel free to roll by, I'm always down for suspension work lol.

thanks for commenting. I don’t have the instructions any longer and I can’t find them on their site for whatever reason. I think there were a couple pieces missing before I even installed these things so who knows.

pics would be good tho.

im going to get a set of the KYB stock replacement top mounts and that should do it. The biggest issue here is the thick metal washer that is supposed to be secured in the body, holding the shock body in place between the upper and lower part of the shock. It moves around and even sunk down to the bottom, so the shock wasn’t actually held in place by something solid.

You got it man, I'll get them posted by tomorrow morning. Hopefully it's as simple as those bushings - I can't remember if my bushings were tapered in the center or not to fill that gap better. Something looks off tho.

Not the same product, but this thread might help guide you in the right direction - probably installs the same as the Teins.

thanks.

that spacer for the rear SHOULD extend from the top rubber to the bottom, securing the shaft of the shock in place. The spacer I have is only like 3/4 thick and doesn’t serve the purpose it’s supposed to.

Hey Steve sorry this took a few days, totally spaced it out. Here's the page from the Flex Z's on the rear end on the tC2 if it helps at all. A little blurry but hopefully the diagram helps.

thanks for the diagram. I don’t have that large piece just under the BODY indicator line. I have that smaller washer below it though. That big piece is what actually sticks up into the hatch area of the car.

I ordered a KYB set and they should be here today.

Np man. And yeah, it looks like the 'dust cover' in the center section of that schematic is missing from your setup. Should fill the gap and fix the noise.

Not sure how the hell the previous owner drove this thing. Monroe struts installed all around using the kit that comes along with them.

Got the parts. I think they’re supposed to be positioned as shown.

Flip that smaller top piece over so rubber goes over metal bushing of "dust cover". Then you've got rubber & rubber touching body of car and no noise. Finally flat-washer and nut on very top pushes on metal instead of rubber.

right now it is rubber to rubber. Here’s a better pic, and a washer that goes on top. Also, there’s no way to make the washer go metal to metal with anything.

UPDATE

i installed everything and drove about 50 miles or so and started hearing a slight rattle coming from the rear. Noticed that on both rear shocks, if I push down on the car, I have about 1/4” of travel on the shock. What I mean is that the top nut and top washer are loose against each other.

when I tightened the stocks down, I had the car still jacked up. Maybe I should have done it with the car on the ground? Either way, there was no more tightening I could have done. Really not sure why there’s so much play back there. All mounts are correctly installed.

EDIT:

ok so it turns out I was tightened down to the bottom of the threaded portion of the shock, which left maybe 1/8” of space between top washer and nut.

Ended up getting like 1/2” worth of washers per side and it seems the problem is solved. Real test is tomorrow after my drive to work which includes some winding roads.

I apologize for hijacking this old thread but had a question. I'm looking to get either this coilover package or mugen racing or even the D2 but my question is when doing this drop do we have to get different end links for the front sway bar since it seems we are adding preload to it? I will be adding a TRD rear sway bar but im wondering if I need to get adjustable from sway bar links for the front. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ideally, yes you should. In practice almost no one has done it and there haven't really been any adverse effects. I went to route of making adjustable front end links and I noticed a slight difference but probably not worth the money I spent in making them.

Was the difference good bad or just different. This is going to send me down another rabbit hole I can see it already lol
