I'm looking for something that is still somewhat hidden away but yet sounds decent and has an attractive ending...

all up to you. im guessing you want a cat-back kind of option as you want to remove stock entirely? do you want to do headers as well? need a little more info on what you want to accomplish with the new exhaust.

hmm. with that budget your either looking at one of the axle-back options available to us already, or something fabbed in a shop.
not sure on cost so youll have to find that out yourself, but id say if you go custom, cut off the stock piping from the front of the stock resonator back (thus losing the giant stock resonator). have them put in a smaller resonator, followed by matched width piping (2.25in) to a muffler of your choice, and a tip. that should keep the noise down. make sure your muffler doesnt have too big of an outlet, or it will be louder.
your easiest route would be to look at an aftermarket axle-back and call it a day. youll get better sound, a slight more pep, and be around your budget. custom could be too much depending on shops near you.
