Just who makes this navigation system and how does one go about updating the maps?

 

I think Alpine make the unit for the Scions. You could call Alpine and see if they have a data disk to update the maps and software. Most gps manufacturers charge for the updates.

 

I have seen both Alpine and Pioneer messages but no specific model number etc. This seems to be well guarded information as I have searched high and low. The Scion website is just a lot of glitz with no real info.

The units are made by Aisin under the Alpine brand. There is no Alpine part # for the unit as it is made for OE application, the line above has the OE part #.

Toyota carries the updated map DVD, make sure it is for a gen 5 navigation unit, although don't expect any functionality upgrades. The maps themselves are only very slightly newer between versions 8.1 (current) and 7.1 (last year's), a lot of new roads aren't on 8.1 yet that were built lat year. You can blame NAVTEQ for that.
