iPod Not Being Recognized
I just picked up an 2009 Scion xD yesterday and am loving it so far. Last night I tried to hook up my iPod (6th generation, 160 gig) through the connector, and nothing happened. I tried with my old one, (4th generation, 20 gig) and it did the same thing. I tried changing the direct control options, which I could...but that did nothing.
Has anyone else had this issue? I'm not sure if it's a bad cable, or if something is wrong with the port, or if I'm just being dumb and missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i have a fifth generation 30gig ipod and it works fine with my 2009 XD.
Does your ipod switch to the SCION screen when its plugged in?
sorry i have to ask...you are using the ipod jack and not the auxiliary...right?
and you did press the AUX button on the stereo after you plugged it in...right?
If you turn off the direct control will it play through the stereo or do you get no sound also? If you get nothing i would try to get another cable, since that would be the easy fix, if that doesn't work, than it may be the port.

Nope, it doesn't do anything when it's connected. The only way I can get it to play anything from the ipod is if I hook it up through the AUX port.
I'm going to try a new cable from a friend at work who has an older tC (I'm not 100% sure he has the port, but I'm hoping).

yeah, I was talking about when I use the ipod jack. When I have it plugged into that and hit the aux/ipod button, it doesn't do anything.
It's only worked when I've disconnected it from the ipod jack and plugged it into the aux port.

Turns out it was just a bad connection. They took out the stereo and all the wires were hooked in. So they disconnected and reconnected everything and it worked. I guess something was just a little loose. But it all works fine now, so it's good to go.
Well after reading how simple it is to work on these cars, I marched outside and ripped my waterfall off, unscrewed the head unit and lo and behold a plug was not plugged into the back. In it went I turned her on and saved a trip to the dealership. Wooohooo!
My 5th Gen iPod Nano works in my Scion xD 2008. However, the ipod cable doesn't charge the Nano and it seems to mess with the settings on the iPod that have to be manually corrected after I unplug it. Basically, barely worth the trouble in my book.
Do other iPods get charged by the iPod cable?

It seems they the 5th gen and newer do not charge with the cable, apple changed the pin configuration after the 4th gen. If you have an older iPod or can get one you may be in luck. I use the power out right by the plug and go to usb power and simply use the aux jack to supply the music.
I just changed my battery recently and started to have problems with my sound system (subs not working) and found my head unit has a menu area accessed by turning off the unit then pressing and holding the Menu button till it displays the options, in there is a option to turn on the subs as well as enable the iPod connectivity. If anyone has problems with the cable-this could be turned off as well. The head unit re set selections when I changed the battery. Grrrr. Oh well, better than buying a new head unit.
that setting only gives you the option of controlling the iPod from the iPod itself and the head unit or JUST through the head unit. most of the premium head units from scion had more menu options accessed when the car was off, they listed them in the manuals.
like mentioned before, apple changed the pin outs to their connector, so unless your head unit has a USB connector you won't get full functionality or charging with apple devices.
it is possible to upgrade to the USB port with aftermarket radios or buying the newer scion head units and cables, they are almost plug and play.
