Default Need to replace dedicated iPod cable

I just bought an '09 Special Release 2.0 with the dedicated iPod jack in the glove box. Almost immediately upon using the iPod I noticed the sound only comes out of one speaker (alternating speakers but usually the left driver's side) or not at all (when it's not working it's really muted and distorted/fuzzy.) I did some research and it seems like the cable is the most likely reason for this. I already ordered a replacement cable from Amazon...is it possible to install this myself? I think I would need to remove the unit from the dash.
