'09 Brake Recall Caused Whistle / Cricket sounding noise!
Just like all of us who got the recall I brought mine in to get it done..
Over the next few days I noticed a whistling / cricket noise when I accelerated. Not exactly repeatable at any rev level, kind of intermittent. It was however more predominant when the motor was cold then after it was warmed up. I thought it might be having another problem (26K on the odometer) but with no dummy lights and a good inspection of the belt I found nothing. Last week I did some goggling and found corolla (1.8L) owners were complaining of the same symptom.
I had enough and brought the car into the dealer today. Guess what, they fixed it! The mechanic told me there was a tech bulletin out from Toyota about this (I guess us early complainers got to them).
The fixed done on mine as it reads from the invoice:
Resecured gasket between spacer and throttle body - No Charge
Hope that helps you folks looking for 'the cure'
