Hello, I have a question about the 2012 Scion XD ventilation system. There is a strong smell of mouse nest coming out when the fan is on. How difficult is it to remove and access the ventilation system?

 

It's not. Undo the black plastic vent trim that is under your wipers and you should have access to everything right there.

I must ask, what exactly does a mouse nest smell like?

 

It smells awful. You can't describe it. You just know it when it happens.

You might want to also just check the INSIDE ventilation system for the problem. Open the passenger glove box, and disconnect the stopper mechanism on the side that prevents the door from opening all the wasy.

take a peek at the (missing?) cabin filter. if you can see maybe you need to use a mirror, but the "nest" might be right there. It's a common occurrence to have rodents sneak in there.

They poured the cleaner/smell be gone in my air system twice. You CAN NOT run re-circulated air or the mold/mildew will come back. So you have to breathe the allergens, car fumes, dirty air because the system closes to tight. It's a defect and I will force them to fix it, at some point. They use the you have to turn it from re circ to circ 20 minutes before you trip is done. They didn't tell me that when I bought the car. There shouldn't be an option if it creates mold and mildew. Should be only fresh/ or outside air. I live in Sacramento. When it's 100 out nothing like breathing the hot dirty air stuck in traffic on the freeway. I have allergies, had a heart attack and am sensitive to dirty air. Thanks Scion!
