Default Brake Recall Issues

Is anyone else having trouble getting the brake recall done from their dealer? (I'm looking at you Wellesley Scion) I emailed them when it first came out asking if I could get it done during my 5k, and was told it wouldn't be an issue, and I could get it scheduled sooner if I wanted. I scheduled my 5k about a week ago to be done yesterday and when I mentioned it to them on the phone the guy had no clue what I was talking about (which worries me considering fixing those cars is their job).

I stopped by for my 5k appointment with the printed recall statement from toyota's media releases and they said that I had to wait a couple months. I tried calling the scion customer experience number, and they said I'd have to wait as well, and that I shouldn't worry because it only affects you if the temperature is around freezing. It was <32 degrees (aka freezing) last night in my area. I'm curious as to whether or not others (especially in cold states that should qualify but aren't on the first round list) have been able to get it done. After all, a recall is still a recall, and if it's cold enough here to be below freezing overnight I don't see why they'd put up a fight. Anyone else having trouble and know how to resolve it?

You can't use a printed media release... you have to wait until they send the actual document to you - directly. If you didn't get one, your vehicle doesn't need it - but your dealer should be able to look that up and verify.

And just FYI, a few nights of freezing isn't what the problem is really about. It's not like your brakes will fail when it freezes.

At my 5k they looked it up and said it does need it, but I can't get it yet.

Like I said though, you still need to have the mailing they send out.

My g/f just had hers done on her xD and had received her mailing a few weeks ago. It's possible they're still mailing them though.

maybe toyota hasn't put together the kit of parts needed to complete the recalled repair yet? maybe the dealership doesn't have them in yet. when i had my recall to laminate the wind deflector, i had to come back another day because they had ran out of the kits or whatever they were using.

They are doing the recall notices in waves, starting with the what they deem the coldest states and then doing the rest. I called the toyota customer service number and that is what they told me and I posted the info on here in one of the other threads addressing this issue. Best thing is to call them if you have questions about the recall, your dealership service dept. may not have any info on this yet.

Yeah I FINALLY got a call back from the dealership (I left them a message on Thursday morning) and they said the recall was only for 11 cold weather states and pretty much read the memo to me. I was pretty ____ed. The guy said he couldn't even order the parts if he wanted to since OH isn't included in the recall list. I smell bull***! He said, "you don't need to do anything since this does not affect your Scion xD."

The only problem is that I am moving to NJ in a few weeks. I also plan to visit friends in upstate NY where it will be incredibly cold. NY is on the recall list, but NJ and OH aren't...so what am I supposed to do? Pray that my brake lines don't freeze? I will have to chat with the local Scion/Toyota dealership when I get to NJ and see if I can get any type of leeway since I'm going to be traveling during the winter (you know...that thing you do with a car sometimes - travel?). Actually, I might call up the Toyota customer service line and see if they can do anything for me since I'll be moving/traveling.

Ugh, I'm irritated at this whole situation.

It will get to all 50 states from what I was told. Call them and express your concerns, thats what I did when I first heard about this, but, being in WA state, they figure we don't get cold enough, for long enough. Good luck, I hope you get the results you are looking for.

Ya, people need to understand there is just a SMALL CHANCE of problems down the road. It is not something that will happen the first cold night you get. It's not like that.

This is how rumors get started. The recall has nothing to do with brake lines freezing in cold weather. It would have to be about 40 below zero before brake fluid freezes.

It does have everything to do with the vacuum port for the power assist.. POSSIBLY.. freezing under the right circumstance and causing your car to have reduced power brake feel.

Also, you must have the official document mailed to you from Scion. They won't just do the recall because you think you need it.

STATUS UPDATE!

I took my xD in for a tune up before I head out east. I explained to the service manager my situation, and she checked on the recall status. Apparently they gave her special permission for my case to have the parts ordered. I should have everything taken care of by the end of the week. This is why I love Toyota...

Alyssarific, please contact me directly at 781-239-6708. I want to get all of the information on what happened. I hope that you can understand that we are bound to what Toyota says. But I would love to hear from you personally as I would like to do my best to help you out. I do want to also say that I have not yet received my letter for this recall, as I am also an xD owner, and have not had the work done yet.

I also live in PA, and have also gotten the letter about the recall. If you read the letter, it says you should have the recall done if you visit the states that have the recall frequently. i'm going to tell them that i go to NY every other week or so, that should get them to do it. hope it works.

I bought my RS1 on Nov. 13 and had it in for the recall on Nov. 20. I live near Canton Ohio. Tell that dealer to call Cain Toyota/Scion in Canton and ask them about it, they looked my vin up and told me it hadn't been done by the previous owner and they would do it along with my 5k maint.
