As a man I usually try not to say this, but that thing is soooo cute. I would like to see some inside pics please. It looks like you would barely have room to take a squat.

Barely room... that should be the name of this trailer! I am 6'2" and I can't stand up in it... almost, but not quite. It doesn't have a bathroom, but it does have a porta-pottie. It is 26 years old and needs some work.... but it is camp-able. The balance is off -- too much tongue weight. I am probably going to move the battery from the front to the rear to help out with that. The fridge is small and kind of scuzzy... but they are about $600, so I might live with it for a while. I'm going to try to get it polished up this weekend... I'll post a pic once it looks prettier.

Don't worry about it... "cute" is the work that comes to mind with these trailers.

Yeah, man... it tows it pretty well. I drove about 20 miles after I filled up the xD... and the display shows 29.7 MPG. Of course, that's only 20 miles. Time will tell what kind of fuel economy I can expect with the trailer in tow. I already have a campsite booked for two nights next month. In the mean time, I've got a little work to do on it.

The camper is well within Toyota's tow rating for the xD... I know, they removed the tow rating for the US market, but Toyota does rate it from the factory to tow. The camper is super light weight... only about 950 pounds empty. Even with water, food, and camping gear in it, it is still within the tow rating.

I don't think I'll be climbing any mountains with it, but it is fine for any place I am likely to go. We have a class-A diesel motorhome, and I wouldn't take that over any mountains, either... that thing is 16,000 pounds and only 185 horsepower. My xD with the Scamp in tow could beat it up a hill for sure.

That video you posted is kind of funny, but not really a good comparison. That is a Renault 5 with a 59 horsepower 1.4 liter engine pulling a caravan that weighs around 2,200 pounds. The xD weighs considerably more, has 128 horsepower, and can easily tow my ~1,000 pound camper.

Renault 5 towing 2,200 lb caravan = 37 pounds per horsepower.
Scion xD towing 1,000 lb Scamp = 8 pounds per horsepower.

It's all good. The effect has faded since that vid has been posted on the VW forum in a discussion about towing... int he Scamp forum after talking about towing with a compact car... and finally here in the Scion forum. Still an amusing video, but it gets a little too much mileage, if you follow me.

There are so many amusing things that people catch on video these days... I can sit and watch youtube all day if I search for "SUV rollover". Most of them are idiots showing off to their friends and rolling their Explorers at 10 MPH.

The interesting thing about towing is that people tend to take it very personally when you do something they don't think is right. Stories start to come out about "someone I know" and "a friend of a friend" who did something stupid while towing and it ruined their life. However, most of these stories seem to be completely made up. Like that story about the xD with the blown transmission due to towing... what ever happened to that thread?

too much mileage... lol (but not really).

the fate of that thread was probably everyone with sense got tired of trying to help someone not making sense make sense... if you follow me.
jk

i hope i don't have to take a picture of my factory manual... that came with my car... from the factory it was made in... thus the poor translations in it...
NOT THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL UUHHH

you bought your xD in England?

I mean, in America, drug offenses don't really call for the death penalty. Just don't try it in Indonesia. Just a warranty concern in my eyes from the begining. Other than that, I'm sure it is totally possible. (Especially if you hate your car).

Does the Toyota North America factory actually make, translate, and publish this "manual" (hehe quotes)? Or is that just "creativity"?

If you can't admit that it is just a little wild to tow that thing with an xD, then play on playa (nothing personal btw)

I really just can't wait for the "I love drifting my xD" thread! haha

I admit it is out of the ordinary to see a small car towing a trailer in this country. It is VERY common to see it overseas. In England, the most popular caravan (camping trailer) magazine just voted the VW Golf as the best tow car for trailers under 3,300 pounds. Yes, that's the tow limit for the VW Golf.

Toyota approves towing approx. 1,600 pounds with the car that WE call the Scion xD. Toyota of N. America is free to change things in the manual. Many things differ from one country to another... such as tow rating, warranty, etc.

Speaking of warranty, mine went away at 36,000 miles, so I am not worried about it. I wasn't worried, anyway... I installed a trailer hitch about two weeks after I bought the xD. I have been towing various trailers ever since. Never had a problem. Actually, I just stopped by the dealership to pick up a shift boot trim piece (I broke one of the tabs when I installed my leather shift boot almost two years ago), and I had the Scamp in tow. The mechanics were coming out to get a look at it... they thought it was pretty cool. I have only once brought any car I have owned in for warranty work, and that was a broken latch on a VW. It cost me more in gas to drive to the dealership than the part cost, so I should have just bought it and done it myself.

Drifting? You got a rear wheel drive xD? If so, I'll drift it!

Just go to England, then... you can get turbo (diesel) and AWD! Oh, and then you get some REALLY respectable fuel economy... like 46 MPG!

That is the stupidest thing i have ever seen anybody do with a scion. Too bad cops arent any smarter or they would keep that death trap off the road. Dont you have any regard for the safety of other people on the road that arent so stupid?
