KEYS: I need a spare, but they're bloody expensive!
Newly purchased 2012 xD, with only the one key / remote.
$300 or more for a spare key with remote and programming? I'm unemployed, so I'd rather not have to pay that much! Two questions:

$300 or more for a spare key with remote and programming? I'm unemployed, so I'd rather not have to pay that much! Two questions:
- According to the 2 Toyota dealerships, there is no more FOB programming at home using a procedure found on the web -- it needs to be done at the dealership with their "machine". True?
- I've been warned that a key I buy online is inferior to the key I would get from the dealership and could leave me with a non-running car when it fails. True?

Responding to my own post:
The US keys have NO transponder or any immobilizer system. Toyota reports that the part number for the key is as follows: 89070-21120
Further, more research shows that this part is more commonly referred to as the following: MOZB41TG
Using 89070-21120 and MOZB41TG on Amazon and eBay, you should be able to order a spare key that any automotive locksmith can cut for $5US. The key has no remote or transponder, but only cost $12US and unlocks and starts the car just fine.
I was also able to get a key with remote FOB as well for about $25. The key can also be cut at any locksmith, but it you cannot self-program it. You can take it to Toyota for this and get reamed for the cost of it, but anyone with Techstream software can also do the programming.
You might try Walmart -- many outlets have a transponder key duplication machines (even though the US remote with not have a transponder, getting it programmed to open the car wirelessly will probably be much more cost effective than going to a Toyota stealership).
