Default Moving large items that need to stick out the trunk?

So the trunk is about 56" long. I want to pick up some bookshelves off craigslist that come out to 74" long. Anyone have experience with this? How did you tie it down and tie the trunk down? Or is this not a good idea?

Advice and directions would be appreciated!

I guess it would depend on the width if you could angle it or what. I've transported my 52" Samsung LCD in my XD. Here's a pic. Name: 8d8372e1.jpg

If you could stack the shelf on it's side; fold down the seat behind the driver; push the front passenger seat fully forward then lean it back... maybe
Or you could get a roof rack.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone has moved stuff that hung out so they had to tie down their hatch somehow because it is not possible to shut. I've moved lots of stuff that I am always surprised fits, but these bookshelves would be the longest item I have ever tried to fit in and it is looking like they're going to have to stick out and I will have to tie down the hatch somehow.

If anyone has had any experience with this I'd love to hear it.

These Honda Fit guys seem to have had a good idea. http://www.fitfreak.net/forums/gener...down-none.html

Here's there idea for the door part

Be careful... The way air moves around these cars will cause exhaust to be pulled into the car when th hatch is open.
