Average 34-36 MPG on highway. Cruise at 70mph, tire pressure at 38psi, 0W20 oil, 87 octane gas. I can get MPG up to 38-39 by pumping 93 octane.

With the roof rack and skis/snowboards mounted the MPG drops down to 28-29.

I use the miles driven divided by fuel pumped method, the MPG gauge is usually off.

Default What's up with my mileage? 24mpg, Please help!

I am very disappointed with this car. I got it thinking I would be enjoying an average MPG somewhere north of 30, but I am now at around 10,000 miles and the last tank i got 230 miles and it tells me my average mpg is around 23 or 24. I have an automatic with 18 inch rims and i use unleaded regular gas. Please offer suggestions. I could have gotten a small SUV and ha much more space with the same mileage. Thanks

You're on 18in wheels, thats why. They're probably heavier than stock and they're definitely larger than stock. Go back to 16in wheels to get better MPG and make sure the 16in wheels are also lighter than the steel rims.

I do have a set of 16 inch rims from a an 06 TC that I am going to put on. The thing is, the 18's look MUCH better, so I am torn. ALso, the rims are factory and not exactly cheap.

18" wheels wont make that huge of a difference. i have heavy 17's on mine and im still pulling 34mpg average, and its all city driving. top speed on this island is 45. its probably more the way they drive it or if they do alot of stop and go. if you want you could even say they might be carrying to much weight in their car too. those are all factors in poor mpg that can be fixed easily.

jcpowell76, Most likely your mileage is due to your driving style. I doubt you would be getting really good mileage in an SUV if you are getting 23-24 in an economy car. Keep an eye on the MPG display and see how much of a difference it makes if you lay off the speed a little. Don't try to accelerate a lot when going up hills. Anticipate when you will need to slow down and try to coast as much as possible instead of needing to use the brakes. You know what they say about your brake pedal: It's a magical device that turns gas into brake dust!

With any vehicle you need to be mindful in order to get the maximum fuel economy. I have two friends who drive hybrid Civics and one gets 44 MPG while the other gets 28 MPG. My fiancee gets 33 MPG in her non-hybrid Civic! Mileage is 1/2 up to the car and 1/2 up to the driver.

lately I've been getting significantly lower results. This is after the break in period, but it has been pretty cold here.

Used to get 33-34 MPG, but now I get around 30-31 MPG. Last tank was actually 29 I think. : [

I'm hoping it is the cold weather.

whats wierd is my mileage went down a little too, even after changing the oil and trying to drive smoothly.

I've also noticed that with the cold weather my mpg went down by about 3 miles, i think it might have something to do with the fact that the transmission is cold and you can either waste fuel by warming the car up and having a smooth transmission or by driving with a sludgy cold transmission. but i have gotten most of my mpg back with hyper-mileing techniques (even though it's annoying not being able to put my foot down and zip through traffic)

maybe it does have something to do with the colder weather - the motor holds its rpms up higher for longer while it tries to warm up. so maybe thats got something to do with it. i checked my tires again and they were a little low, so i topped them off - we'll see how that changes things.

1st tank: 35.7 MPG
2nd tank: 33.4 MPG (driving a little harder for proper break-in)

I've only driven about 20 miles on the 3rd tank, but the display says 44.9 MPG, which is probably more like 42. Both of the other tanks were about 3 MPG high. Those numbers above are calculated, not the displayed number.

as stated before, I still average 25 with theneed to have the defogger on all the time. but then again, being out of work means I don't have to drive anywhere anymore. I gas up every two weeks at least.

JDMJim, have you checked for water getting in somewhere? Constant fogging could be a leaking heater core, too. It's very damp here and temps have been varying a lot, but I can't imagine having to constantly run the defogger. Maybe your area is even muggier than Maryland.

c2iix, do you take a lot of very short trips?

I filled up this morning and reset my trip A meter. I drove about 20 miles to work and the display said ~45 MPG. Then I drove out to lunch, which brought it down to 39 MPG. I drove home (32 miles) and it is back up to about 41 MPG. I was able to drive about 50-55 MPH the whole way. I did spend a few minutes at 60 MPH.

I'm assuming that my true mileage is about 3 less... so I'm sitting somewhere around 38 MPG on this tank so far.

Your MPG average is based on the "Trip A" meter. While viewing the Trip A, press and hold the button and it will clear the meter and your average MPG.

When I shift depends on the situation. Accelerating to highway speed, I'll shift around 3k to 4k rpm... occasionally higher (fun!). Accelerating in town, I'll shift more like 2.5k to 3k RPM. I try not to load it too much at low RPMs (sub 2k).

I'm new to the xD... so I'm still figuring things out.

I have had my xD for all of 4 days now. My MPG started around 25-26 MPG while doing a lot of short trips. As soon as I started doing longer trips, it jumped way up. I'm now averaging about 29 for this tank of gas.

I kind of like the 'instant MPG' readout. I find it a useful feedback tool to learn to drive fuel-efficiently. I figure I should have no problem getting 30 mpg+ average with some conservative driving. I am curious to see what I will be getting on the highway.
