Default Xd...Maybe.

Hey everyone, I have a question or two for you. First a little back groud. I currently have a 2006 Xb that is used as a daily driver. It is automatic. I have installed Tein springs and 17" Enkie wheels. Anyway. I am considering changing from the Xb to an Xa or maybe a Xd. I would probably do the same type of minor mods and it would be used as daily transportation.
With an automatic trans, what can I expect for highway gas mileage? Also, tell me alittle about your experinces with the Xd and would you buy one again? My only complaint with my Xb is that it is underpowered. How about the Xd?

Thanks,

Mike

If you think the xB is underpowered don't get an xD...lol. With that being said, I usually average 34-35 mpg highway (auto trans), and my best is 42 or so. Lots of people on here report 45 mpg driving conservatively. The xD is the ultimate grocery getter, without being too wimpy...but if you want to have fun in your car, you might want to go elsewhere...lol.

My g/f can average 35-40mpg on highway in her xD... usually near 40mpg if ONLY highway. She has 5spd though - but shouldn't really be different.

I have an 05 tC and even I'm fairly impressed with her xD. I personally wouldn't buy one - but that's b/c it's not what I'm looking for. To be honest, we didn't really compare to any other cars too much - but it is a solid car. I'd recommend it if you want something like that.

In comparison to a first gen xB, the xD is more powerful; but, to the OP, if you're looking for something with noticeably more power, then why not consider a used Civic Si EP3 hatch? Unless you're only looking for an automatic...then I'm not sure what to tell you other than start looking at slightly less compact vehicles if you're in it for more power

gas mileage for me has been about 30-32 city; and anywhere up to 41 highway (but I'm manual...)

enjoy~

I love my xD!!! its a great car it has a little of both worlds and yes it does have a little more kick than the older 06 xB just lookin at the specs on both vehicles could tell you that th xB is a 1.5l at 103bhp and 101 lb-ft of tourque where as the xD is a 1.8l at 128bhp and 125 lb-ft of tourqe and the xD does weigh about 200 lb's more but to me from driving both the xd feels a little more low profile and sporty and has a little more get up compared to the xB. But thats just me others may think differnt lol

Since you're complaining your current generation xB is underpowered, why not switch to the new xB?

It's more voluminous and much more powerful. And economy on that car is still pretty good, but you have plenty of "go" when you need it.

On my xB2, I average 26mpg 70city/30hwy... 27mpg if I drive better. It's all about how you drive in order to get the best fuel economy. The features of the xB2 far outweigh the fuel economy. I'd rather have the extra power.

But I've had the liberty of driving and riding in the xD after I bought my xB2, and all I can say is that the xB2 is an upgrade from the xD. The xD has its quirks, but the xB2 to me is a better all-around vehicle, just not as high fuel economy. AND it's still a small car. Smaller than my girlfriend's 09 Ford Focus coupe.

When I used to work way out in another city where my driving was 80hwy/20city, I received 34mpg all-around, specifically because it was highway.

So if you're looking for fuel-sipping, the xB2 is still an exceptional choice. I felt too cramped in the xD, and I'm only 5'10".

I'm 6'0" and I'm fine in the xD

not to ____ on your parade lol just...saying..height has nothing to do with it. Different people, different opinions; my point is if you're tall don't judge the xD on exterior size, actually get your feel for sitting inside. you may deem it too cramped, or you may be fine with it.

I'm auto, and my mileage on highway (averaging 65 mph) gives me between 36-38 mpg's. Mixed with city driving it will go down to 30-32 mpg. I am dropped on Tanabe DFs with Enkei wheels, and I have an Injen CAI and pulley installed. The latter two helped, at least just enough to take on traffic comfortably.

As a daily driver, I'm extremely happy with the xD since I have to commute 40 miles/day to get to and from school. But since your biggest complaint about your B is that it is underpowered, you won't get that much more on the D. As someone already suggested, the xB2 with the camry engine might actually be more what you're looking for. One of my friends said he was getting around 30 mpg highway on his.

I can chime in as far as the crash ratings. I rolled my first xD on new year's day. The interior (minus the broken passenger window and shattered windshield) didn't look damaged at all. The roof collapsed outside, but inside, you can't tell.

Second, gas mileage. I drive 100+ miles a day for work (most the PA turnpike), and average about 35 MPG. City (where i live is horrible for red lights) I average around 26-28 MPG. I have an auto transmission.

It's a solid, sturdy car, and very reliable in the snow. That's why I bought a second one, and this new one has VSC and Traction control on it. It's worth it.

lol damn, I sound like a pessimistic **** who hates his car. I LOVE my car like all things I own, but I was just trying to be as honest as possible since the OP asked about power.

A good place to compare different models side by side is autotrader.com . Just click the research button then the compare button and enter what ever you fancy. My advice would be to test drive one. If you like the dimensions in person and like the acceleration, buy it. As for the power side of things, I am happy with my XD. I drive a little aggressive and live in a area covered in mountains and my average mpg has not dipped below 31mpg (all city driving). 5 speed manual
As for the XB2, the 0-60 time is about the same as the XD. Motor Trend says the time is 8.4s for a manual XD and 8.5s for an auto XB2 (XB2 weighs ~ 400lbs more). So it just comes down to if you like the way one looks, drives, volume, or has an aftermarket following (not really sure what cars you are considering besides the XD).
A little seat time in a XD,Fit,XB,Mazda 3,Versa,Fiesta,Mazda 2, or whatever (Aveo?) should tell you what you like. So go test drive something. I used to go test drive when bored. One more thing, Where is my new Suzuki Swift?!

I feel like I'm banging crip in blood territory here with my xB2 raving. lol

I've only ridden and test drove in the xD 2 times, but the xB2 felt more comfortable to me. It's really user preference. They're both great cars. I just like the xB2 more. But... I'm going to leave this topic b/c I'm afraid for my life. Good luck to the OP!

long story short. there are many factors but really if your looking for power then i dont think scion is really much of an option unless you add some extra horses here and there. new civic si? dont lower standers. they may be somewhat fast but its really another honda in the streets lol. why not the latest generation sentra se-r spec v (200hp 6spd).

Lots of people on here report 45 mpg driving conservatively.
Have to chime in here... this statement is simply not true. There is one person on here with an average near 45. I drive very conservatively most of the time, and I was able to get 41.6 MPG once. I have gotten 40.x MPG a handful of times in the 29,000 miles I have been driving my xD. My overall average is 36.3 MPG, but that does include some towing. I estimate that I would be about 1 MPG higher if I never towed my trailer.

"Evil Pumpkin" has the best xD mileage on record that I know of, and that is 45.9 MPG. His overall average is 41.9 MPG. Don't expect to average more than that unless you are an extreme hypermiler.

Oh, and most people go by the display on the dash, which always reads about 2-3 MPG higher than what you are actually getting. Mine has been as much as 4 MPG off, but is usually 2.5-3 MPG off. All the numbers I used above are true MPG. Well, it is also known that the odometers are slightly off... which would make the actual MPG about 3% higher... but who's counting? Oh, yeah... me.

ugh, i'm the only one that just breaks 30mpg. =( by the way i love the D, until it gets popular like 1st and 2nd gen xb's then i'll move on to another kind of scion. lol. it's cool when there's all other scions and just a handful of xd's.

My xD doesnt seem to like the winter blend of gas. Might also be that I'm using the remote starter and letting it idle more lately too.

Seems these last few winter months I'm lucky to be getting 25-26 mpg (calculated). I drive 25 miles each way for work and its a 50/50 mix of city and highway with a vicious mountain climb thrown in on the way to work. On the way home its a fun coast downhill tho.

Summer time I do a much more respectable 30-32 mpg.

Being that I have owned a Gen1 xB and now the xD I can say that the xD is a much better built car quality wise...No more tin can feeling and when doing 75 on the freeway the engine is not revving high into the RPM's...Is a fast car? NO...We didn't buy our Scions because they were fast (although we can make some model of Scions FASTER by adding engine mods and such) we bought them because they were practical and because we love Scions...The xD is definately quicker than the old xB...And when modded properly, it will handle very well too...Don't even look into the xA, not when coming out of Gen1 xB...

Like katchkillah said, I see xD's here and there, but rarely do I see on all done up...On the other hand, I see xB's all done up every where I go...My xD gets alot of lookers because it is done up...

So, do I like my xD nore than my xB? Yes and No...I liked the Gen1 xB for what it was...Unique at the time and "so what if you don't like that I drive a box" attitude...They were fun to drive and got lots of looks...The xD is a different breed of car...Doors close with a thunk...Interior is better quality...Has more standard features...Engine is bigger and smoother...etc...

So now in my driveway, I currently own the following: (Yes I am loyal to Scion)

1. Wife drives a 2010 Scion xB RS7
2. I drive a 2008 Scion xD RS1
3. Daughter drives a 2005 Scion xA
4. My old Ride 2005 Scion xB RS2
