First Time Changing Brakes
Hello all,
I own a 2010 Scion xD with about 218,000 miles. My inspection is due at the end of the month. I know they're going to want to do some work on the brakes, because there is a violent shudder, or shake that occurs when I apply the brakes, and it seems like the cause is that the rotors are warped. So, I am going to try to replace the front and rear brake pads and rotors myself for the first time, to save money. My question is, are the front brakes and rear brakes the same? I am trying to look it up, but I can't seem to get a straight answer. Some places mention drum brakes, which, to be honest, I'm not what those are, or if they're stock with the car. To accomplish my goal, what all do I need to purchase? I know, obviously, rotors and pads, but is there anything else I'm missing? I do a lot of driving, like, at least 2,500 miles per month, probably more. I do drive fast, but I try not to be too aggressive, to minimize the wear on the car. So, what brands or products would be recommended, considering my driving style?

First, look up specs. Looks like you've got front disc and rear drum brakes.

Then get parts.

Check wheel-bearings, lots of shaking while braking can come from loose wheel-bearings. Also inspect all suspension pivot bolts and bushing. And crossmember
bolts & bushings.

I recently did my brakes on my xA which is similar to the xD system. I bled and flushed the brake fluid, replaced the front rotors, slide pins, boots, and pads. The chattering is probably from worn and warped front rotors. For the rear drums, I replaced the drum, shoes and hardware. Before I put everything back together, I made sure the front piston and rear cylinder lining were still good and not leaking fluid. If you have time, I'd clean the parts of rust, brake dust and gunk. Hope this helps out and good luck.
