Default Steelies paint wearing off? And a few other questions...

Does this normall happen? I just kinda rubbed it off after I applied some Tire / Wheel Cleaner/Shine.

I'm worried it was the Cleaner/Shine that "burned" it off. Could that be the factor? It was some cheapo Dollar Store stuff. >_<

Btw, what spray paint should I use for the Steelies? And what size lug nutz do I need for the xB?

Any high quality spray paint would work. Plasticoat has a line of paints specifically for wheels in rattle cans. You want the best ?? remove the tires and take the wheels to a reputable powdercoater

Heh, removing the wheels and powder coating it would cost more than they are work.

Plasticoat? Is that the brand? Does Pep Boys have them?

Btw, can you guide me to buying lug nuts? I see some on ebay, these specifically...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MUTEK...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Tuner...26484861QQrdZ1

I assume both will fit, but why is the first one so cheap with so many lug nuts? I am using these to complement my rim trims...

Plasti-coat is at any hardware/auto store.. works great, and
the paint wear there is normal, not the tire shine doing it or
anything else. Scuff them all up with some 360 grit or higher
sandpaper (after cleaning them completely), and spray away.
light even coats, I like plasticoat, bumper black or flat black.
Here's how the flat black, with the bumper black as a base
(primer) looks on the grill..

Flat black is nice, I want something glossier. It doesn't seem like you used a clear coat though. But the grill doesn't need a gloss.

Thanks for the input! Btw, thats a great write up. I might do that myself. =D

why would you spend $30 on lug nuts when you can get them at your parts store for 20?

No real need to sand them prior to paint. Just wipe em down good with some 90% rubbing alcohol and spray. Get some gloss black duplicolor wheel paint. 2 cans should do all 4 wheels with 2 good coats. Then follow up with a coat or 2 of Duplicolor wheel clearcoat. They will look new.

Yes, as long as you remove all the grease and tire goo the paint will stick great. Wipe them down with either brake cleaner, carb cleaner or good rubbing alcohol. After they dry and warm back up spray away and follow the directions on the can. If you sand them first you will have to prime them to fill the scratches. If you are real worried about the paint peeling down the road just spray with adhesion promoter first.

MmmBoxy,
They already have the trim rings, lugs and center caps. Yours are nice but they are still caps and you can tell.
When you painted your caps you should have run 1/2 inch masking tape down the center of the spokes first then clearcoated for a unique look.

If you really want the paint to adhere the best it can you MUST SAND the surface to be painted. This does not mean use some heavy grit sand paper. It means use some 320-400 grit wetsand paper to dull the surface and smooth any minor imperfections. You DO NOT need to remove all the paint, just sand, make sure there are no shiny spots and paint the rims.
