Has anyone attempted to change out a rear wheel bearing yet??

Dealer wants $300+ to replace complete hub assembly.

Noise coming from right rear, sounds like a 4x4 with 44" mud tires.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

It can't be that hard to replace a hub assembly, especially being a complete assembly.

How much is the part? If you have some mechanically aptitude, I bet you could do it with in a hour.

 

pretty easy to take out and put on.....did mine myself....took about 40 min tops to finish....

 

On other front wheel drive cars the front bearing is sealed and you need a press or remove the steering knuckle to get a shop to press it in. Most shops will press bearings. The rears are like the fronts of old cars with a inner and outer race, grease cap, seat and races. The hardest part would be removing and installing the large axle nut, then setting hte pre load. Prepare to get messy and to grease the bearing up, but not the brake drum or shoes.

 

I think that the $350 price that Toyota charges is a bit excessive!!
After all, this is meant to be an economy car, right??

I am prepared to change out the bearings myself.
I found the replacement bearings online for $26, I just dont know if they are same front to rear.

Where did you purchase the replacement bearings??

 

That bearing looks much wider than a regular sealed or shielded bearing. Almost looks like it has 2 inner races and one outer race.

 

I have seen them on ebay for around 150, but you need to get the whole assembly, it is a sealed unit and there is no way to service it.

 

I just did this job about two weeks ago on my 2005 Xa that has 120,000 miles of highway driving on it in Connecticut where they use salt and some other harsh stuff to maintain the roads.

First, I paid $140+ for an OEM bearing from Amazon, it is a sealed unit with the ABS sensor in it.

I did a brake job while I was in there as well.

Finally, it took me over an hour to pound out the bearing that was rusted in there from seven years of New England winters. I put Antisieze compound on all the joints when I put it back together so it should come out easier next time if I have to do that again.

 

Did you do all bearings or just the rear? I need to do my fronts had the bearings but i think ive been riding on the bad ones so long i need to replace the whole hub

 

This job is very easy. I was going to make a do it yourself for it ,but it only takes for lugs to take your wheel off and then 4 bolts to take the rear wheel bearing assembly out and an abs plug. Super ez job.

 

I picked up a pair of rear wheel bearing units with the ABS plug in the back off eBay, $59.00 for the pair brand new in the box. It took about 30 mins a side to change them, car sounds like New.

The Toyota dealer wanted $1300 to do the job. One of the most profitable hours I have spent in a long time.

Started making noise at 145k BTW.

not too bad, take wheel off, remove caliper holder, remove rotor, remove 4 bolts on back, remove the abs clip on the back of the bearing, replace the same as you took a part

just do not, i say do not buy them from Autozone, i did and with in a month, they went bad, made in china, is what the box said, i have now gotten a better set on line, so far no problems.

 

I've read on this site very good reviews on the Hubs sold by NAPA Autoparts.
