The interior of the new Prius hybrid, however, has had a significant re-design, with the world's most famous hybrid car adopting a far more modern look that shares styling cues with the Toyota Corolla...

Pundits are predicting the new Prius will be powered by a bigger, more powerful four-cylinder petrol engine - up from 1.5 to 1.8 litres - taken from the Corolla.

The new engine, when combined with a new electric motor, is expected to put out an extra 30kW of power, bringing total output of the hybrid powertrain to roughly 120kW, the same as Toyota’s Camry medium sedan.

Despite the extra power, fuel consumption will be better than the current model.

Some estimates say the new car will have a fuel label rating of just 2.9 litres per 100km, down from the current model's 4.4L/100km. These seem optimistic, however, given the increase in engine capacity.

The fuel economy improvements will come from a more efficient nickel-metal-hydride battery and updates to Toyota’s hybrid drivetrain.

There is also talk of a solar panel on the roof to power the electronics and air-conditioning. ...

A plug-in hybrid version is also expected to be available early next decade.

We will see. I thought they decided the plug in option was fleet only and not for end consumer? GM says they can do plug in and bring the volt to market despite not having a battery supplier or design.

no!

they are putting lithium ion battery instead of the nickel-metal hydrate battery. and they say that the battery can hold the charge longer and will provide more TQ so just a quick drive will not even require engine use

I spoke with someone from Toyota....that's not going to happen anytime soon, at least the first line of the third gen...

Trust me

if toyota releases 100mpg prius, then its game over for toyota. they have to strategically release cars...

There is a 100mpg priuis, but it's an aftermarket company that does the battery your talking about.

Fine, I will say it.

I met a rep at the local state fair last year. This prius is the one they were going to release last year, but it was not ready.

Its basically a tweaked 08 prius with better battery, dual vvt engine and adjustments to the regen braking points, so you do not need to ride the brakes to make it recharge when slowing.

The current ones have had tweaking in this area, however because of the abs and stability control, it turns off the regen braking when moderate braking force is applied to the petal.

So, your energy that could be used to recharge the battery is wasted as heat. Right now you need to press the petal enough to turn on the brake lights.

Est fuel ecoomy was like 80mpg. Keep in mind the fuel economy sucks til you get 3000 miles on it.

Did not get his name or card, however they had a big green display. Toy was a big sponsor, they had the hybrids on display, va tech was there with their hybrid and they had another company giving out cf light bulbs.

FYI, the va tech guy told me if the aero of the xa is like the focus then according to their model it would need 13hp to maintain highway speed not counting a head or tail wind resistance, this is just for rolling and air resistance.

Hey, 80 mpg is like double what most user already get, if these users would drive more efficiently they could get more. I have a co worker who does highway driving at 75mph and she gets 51mpg.

The va tech guy had a program to tell what hp is needed to move a car to or cruse at a certain speed. It had the formula for rolling resistance and air resistance, however no wind, head or tail. So, I asked him to dial in 2300lbs at 60mph. He did not have a profile for an xa, so he used the ford focus hatch back and increased the weight for me to give some figures for hp needs if it is powered by electric.

Toyota needs to offer hybrid options in all their vehicles, period.

It could use some improvements as the battery is only 7 amps. A larger battery and a plug in option would kill.

Heres what I know about the gm volt. The gm volt is going to use the same electric 3 phase ac system as the ev one they had out for lease only back in the late 90s, but with lithium batteries and plug in option. The engine will be the 3 cylinder 1.0 from the geo metro to a generator to recharge the battery only.

THe whole car is electric like the ev one and can get est 40 miles before it needs to be recharged or the gas engine to turn on. Therefore, if you drive it less than 40 miles and plug it in, no gas is used. If you make short trips only, your gas may go bad before its burned. If you need to go farther, no problem, you got the ability.

The prius on the other hand uses the electric motor under 35mph with mild acceleration, over that, hard acceleration or when cold, it runs the gas engine. Plus, it only uses 20% of the battery and keeps it in a mildy discharged state. Great if you ride your brakes to a stop to recapture that energy.
