But then I'm not a Democrat, so I wouldn't know...
You can't be all bad though, Ashe. At least you don't help fund terrorism by driving a 6 mpg SUV like most "conservative" hypocrites.

Actually, out here in CA (the land of the liberal), SUV's are the popular choice. Look at liberal Hollywood. . . nothing but Hummer, Escalades, Expeditions, Yukon's, etc. They sell better here than out in the mid-west. Strictly talkin SUV's, of course.

I think a Democratic Policy would invovle throwing away money at unproductive social programs aimed at peace, while closing borders to trade (free trade is economically proven to have high net benefits, despite job losses, which are FEW, relative to national savings). I hate democrats and republicans. . . it's about finding the middle line. Any extremist clearly has no idea how politics work, either way. . . but all this junk has nothing to do with drum BRAKES.

I believe they make performance drum shoes/pads. . . you know, many a performance car (back in the day) had drum brakes all around, and they stopped relatively well for their weight. . . old school Porsche's, Corvettes, etc etc.
Others have argued with me before, but I've talked to a few specialists out there and confirmed, doing a rear disc conversion without a serious front brake upgrade is a bad idea, so you are on the right track. If you want brake performance tho, save your money and invest it all in the best front brakes possible; rotors, pistons, pads, etc. . . then upgrade your wheels and tires (size matters. . . bigger wheels = slower acceleration and slower braking because of more rotational mass). Those items will give soon before your rear drums do. Once all those items are the best they possibly can be, then consider a rear disc conversion. . . but even then, it should only be a consideration, IMO. . . at least for these cars.
Shoe/pad upgrades? Probably wouldn't hurt, but I'd save the money.

i bought a 1986 GTI w/ stainless steel braided lines and crossdrilled rotors front and rear, and with the stock non-adjustable proportioning valve, the car would constantly lock up the rear brakes on heavy braking. fun, but certainly not ideal. honestly, a set of good pads for your front brakes will probably make a very noticeable difference...i wouldn't worry too much about the rear drums, let 'em be and you'll be fine.

you'd probably be better off converting it to discs. looks better, performs better... period. drums are just there to save from the manufacturer. think of it as a long term investment, not just the intial money you'll be putting down. too bad there aren't many manufacturers that make conversion kits. hell, someone might as well propose to AEM or some of the other BRAND name companies to produce a kit. i think there'd be a good interest in it.
