widest tire i can put on the stock 17s?
You really do not want to put that wide a tire on a 7"wide wheel, you will not have proper sidewall support and can induce dangerous handling characteristics. I would not even put on a 225, will not look that great, will not gain much if any improvement, could get a bit of the above problem as well.
But, I swapped from the crap Brigstones to Kumho ASX in the stock size and they look really good, have a wider apperance and by far ride and handle better plus alot quieter.

I had 225/45/17 tires on my 2000 Celica GT-S with a 2" drop. I will be going with 235/45/17 with the tC. My 5Zigen Super 6 are 17's and I will be putting new 235 tires on, along with a 2" drop. I will be lowering my car this Saturday and will definitaly take some pics when I get done.
BTW.....225 or 235 will look good and be fine too. More cusion for the pushen can be better sometimes....

Most tire manufacturers recommend a 7.5" wide wheel for 225, 8" for 235, 8.5" for
245, and 9" for 255 (this also varies some based on aspect ratio...one size up on the aspect ratio (5%) seems to knock the recommended width down one size (.5")). Also, the tires will generally fit one size below and above what is recommended so you also can put a 225 on 7" or 8", 235 on 7.5" or 8.5", 245 on 8" or 9", and 255 on 8.5" or 9.5".

You mean 235 on 7.0" is ok...... 235 fit perfect on 17x7.0 rims, but can mainly depends on the offset of the wheel, since a 235 is wider then 225, therfore if the offset is not right it will rub the outside/under fender panel......
No, I mean 235 on 7.5" is ok. That's for a 40 series tire though. A 235/45R17 is safe on a 7" wide wheel but a 235/40R17 is not and that's the more correct size for the tc unless you want your speedo to be off. Stock tire height is 24.62" so you want to be as close to that as possible. A 235/45 is 25.33" tall so your speedo will be off more than it would with a 235/40 which is 24.40" tall. You can probably but a 235/40 on the stock 17 but it isn't considered safe by most tire manufacturers so you do so at your own risk and if you have a blowout and damage your car don't plan on blaming the tire.
