James Press, the chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., said the new Tundra is as vital to Toyota as Camry, which has been the best-selling family car in the United States for the past five years; Lexus, the country's top-selling luxury division, and Scion, the three-year-old brand that has been a hit with young, hip consumers.

"It's one of the most important introductions we've ever had," Mr. Press said in an interview here...

... the Tundra is capable of towing more than 10,000 pounds, and will come equipped with a new 5.7-liter V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. ... this Tundra is compatible with Bluetooth technology, a feature found on its Lexus models, and has multiple connection ports for laptops, cellphones and other devices.

Only problem I see is that the people that are still buying Detroit's own trucks are not going to give two craps about anything with Bluetooth and Laptop Ports. Most of the people they're aiming at want a truck to do work and tow things.

Strange move, I think.

...the other thing is that people actually in Detroit aren't buying this truck or any other, since all of the auto plants are shutting down, and they have no jobs. Mexican assembly of parts made in India and China is the ultimate goal of the "big 3". How annoying for them that in the U.S. there are these stupid wage requirements. How fat and lazy of these Americans to think that they should get paid enough to support families just because they work. It's not import competition that is causing these plants to shut down- it's the desire to maximize profit thru cheap labor.

It's so crazy how if you buy a Toyota tundra- it's actually Made in Evansville, Indiana. 'Japanese' cars are now more "american" than a majority of the product from the big 3.

If you want to 'buy american' do some research. The americans you should worry about are the ones who make this crap, not some old jowl faced man in a grey suit-they don't care who makes their junk, as long as they do it cheap.

Sorry... A little off topic, but I'm from Detroit originally. And it just really sucks.

at some point the American people will see that corporate America owns the government and is oppressing the American people through fiscal means and a revolution will again take place. Perhaps not a violent revolution, mind you, but a revolution non-the-less.

Civil rights?

...On the floor of the Chicago Auto Show this week, Ford lined up seven of its F-series pickup trucks — in red, white and blue — with their formidable front ends aimed directly at Toyota's display...
Hm... A Toyota Truck built here in the states, or an "american labelled truck" built in mexico?
I think even if not everyone is going to use the technology (bluetooth/laptop ports) , I don't think anybody would mind having it ~ Infact I'd like to see more technology integrated into cars (note: don't forget mp3 player ports & also something i'd like to start seeing is USB/Firewire ports). In addition, a wireless router/hub via satellite or wireless broadband would create a mobile operations/command center adding onto initial idea stated in the article.
One of these days a Carputer will come standard/optional from the factory.

Other than some Rams the big 3 trucks are still made in the US. Many cars arent though.

I don't know about now, but when I bought my '01 Tundra, it had a higher American content than the F150. The F150 is still built here. I still own the Tundra and it's been the best vehicle I've ever owned. I too am from and still live in the Detroit area and the "buy American" sentiment, at least for cars is very strong here. I have worked for one of the "big 3" for 14 years and I've been telling them for the last 10 years or so that if we don't start making some decent cars, we're going to be in trouble. And we are.

I also live in the Detroit area. It is very strange to go even as close as Ohio and see way more Hyundais (my wife's little SUV) or Scions (my box). Still very UAW-minded here in good ol' metro Detroit. But watching either Speed or Discovery and they had a look back at imports in the 70s. Same story we are hearing today, 30 years later.

The imports are lighter, smaller, and get better mileage, and cost less. I remember the late 70s, and many people left the state. The joke was "Last one out of Michigan, please turn out the lights." Today it is the same thing. They never learn. The Big 3 still wants to build giant, heavy, muscle cars or SUVs. Not everyone wants one. Their inexpensive cars are cheaply made, and look like garbage. The only GM car I even considered was the HHR, which is nice. But it was about 4 - 6 grand more than my box, and worse mileage.

I should dump what little stock I have in Ford and buy some bubble gum...it would last longer.

PS: If you really want to get a UAW guy going, try calling your xB a "truck." Gets my brother ticked off everytime.

I'm currently driving a 2004 F350 Super Duty Diesel Lariat (best model). I need it for my business as I have a mobile storage business and tow 11,000 lbs worth of trailer almost daily. I love the exterior look of my truck, however, the interior is totally dated and boring and the truck is unreliable. The check engine light is on more than it's off. If Toyota made a 1 ton diesel capable of doing what I needed, I'd be all over it.

As far as Bluetooth technology? I've got a Motoralla phone with it built in and I'd love it if my truck had the capability. I'd also like XM and a port for my MP3 player but none of that was available in my Ford when I got it.

I think there are more of us out there than you think.
