Toyota Prius Gets Updated
As found on The Hollywood Extra:

The Prius just received a few minor updates for 2006.
But an all new one in on the way.
The new hybrid system will still use a 1.5 Liter engine, but Toyota insiders claim an amazing figure: 95 MPG!!!
Even it these numbers are (Like the current model's official numbers) inflated, that might still mean at least 70MPG in real life driving.
If this is true, it would put Toyota way ahead of any competition. (although the all new Fit hybrid will get pretty close)
This illustration shows an evolutionary design. But I think Toyota will actually come up with something much more different.
And with a 95MPG claim, it might even become a hit in Europe, where the current model doesn't really get better numbers than many Diesel cars...

that photoshoped car has a Toyota Ractis front clip. Nice rumor starter. Don't know what's so evolutionaryabout it since the design is alredy being used o a current car in Japan. You can take a current Pruis and add a 5 grand upgrade using solar panels and boost mileage to 75mpg's. Tuner wise, Blitz turbo'd one in Japan.
I thought Toyota wanted "unique" styling with their Hybrids...
"...Yaris + ... + Prius = Yucky..."
Think outside of the "box" instead of re-using it.
Anywho.. I hope they elevate beyond the 100mpg+ barrier ~ that would be sumthing.

can they make it look a little more normal.... what is it doing with those wheels on it... its a prius
Finally - someone who knows what Normal is. Quick, call the American Psychiatric Council. They've been haggleing for years about what normal is. (teeheehee)
I like it; but then, I'm an xB owner. I'm also artsy-fartsy, enjoying things that are different.
It figures, I just traded in my Silverado for this better mpg auto. Arrrgh, whatcha gonna do - every year, if not every 6 months, something better comes along (by better, I'm refering to the mpg thang).

ive noticed that lexus has some normal looking hybrids, and now the camary is available in a hybrid......
im not a hybrid fan but if i was to buy one it would have to look mainstream, im trying to make a political statement by buying one so i dont need to look like im in a pod or egg of a car.

The mainstream looking hybrids are Good & all, however they're Only achieving "decent" MPG for a "hybrid" while maintaining pretty sweet HP #s, so its the medium of the two technologies.
It's my belief that the Prius emphasizes on efficiency, therefore a "crossover hybrid" is going to have a tuff time achieving the 100+/-MPG the Prius can hopefully achieve (75-80 MPG real world drivin ~ hopefully).
From how it looks, the 2K6 is going to be pretty much the same with minor changes. I just hope Toyota stays away from happy face smiley car designs in general. Don't get me wrong, after seeing the Yaris in person its not a bad looking car. However, in my opinion its a cutesy beattle type "girlie" car (no offense girls) because of its smiley face frontend.
Anywho, enough of my ranting off topic...
No more bland/plain/dullness designs Toyota...
Elevate ~
thankfully, we can all see it's just a drawing. anyway.
i believe in japan, honda and toyota are having a ____ing contest on MPG. on their fuel, they already hit near 100mpg. but the prius was 1-2mpg behind the insight, so, they upped it to somewhere around 150 there, so here it equates to something near 95 here.
has a lot to do with using lithium batteries, i believe.

The next-generation Toyota Prius will use a turbocharged engine and lithium-ion batteries to achieve its rumored 94 mpg rating, according to a published report. The latest issue of the U.K.’s AutoExpress magazine indicates a lean-burn 1.8-litre turbo engine will be coupled the THS-II hybrid system with efficient lithium ion batteries to great improve efficiency. Toyota is also said to be considering a plug-in capability as as standard feature. Currently, many Prius owners modify their cars for plug-in charging, but that can void the car’s warranty. In issue 904, the magazine reported the new 94 mpg Prius would offer an improved 0-62 mph time of under 10 seconds. Changes are also likely to come to the exterior of the new Prius. Early last month, we reported that Toyota is considering using design to help differentiate its hybrid offerings from its other models.

I heard in training just last month that Toyota is NOT using Li-Ion due to cost concerns. Seems like they would continue utilizing NiMH batteries to continue to drop their prices and help for future replacement issues, if they should arise.
Plus, that little blurb above me uses the term "THS" which was the name for our first 2 hybrid systems - Toyota Hybrid System. The current company-wide term for the hybrid system is HSD -Hybrid Synergy Drive.
And as for making the Prius "more normal" - that's why we made the Camry Hybrid. THAT'S the normal one - the Prius is for people who WANT to pilot a space craft.
