You should be fine with something like Krylon Fusion, just make sure you clean the cover real good first.

go to an auto paint store. get some grey scotch bright pads, some bulldog or bulldog black adhesion promoter, and whatever color paint you want. then get soapy water and scrub that thing down. next spray the bulldog let dry then paint. ur done.

I am professional Auto Body Painter. I suggest you stay away from spray can products if possible. If you want it to last use regular automotive exterior paint products. I have used both basecoat/clearcaot as well as single stage urethanes for years on engines and engine compartment areas. As long as they arent right at a header (very very hot..) they last very well. Certainly clean and degrease thoroughly and sand the parts with at least a grey scotchbrite pad....an adhesion promoter for plastics is likely a good idea also before painting this part. Then follow with the colors of your choice;)

...But if you're on a budget, go for Krylon Fusion or Rust-Oleum For Plastics, as said above. They adhere very well, look great, and don't need primer.

Sorry for resurrecting this topic, but I'm changing my sparkplugs this weekend, and I thought I'd paint the engine cover at the same time.

I'm DEFINITELY on a budget, so I'm going to go for the Krylon fusion. I don't suppose anyone who's done this can weigh in on what it looks like after a year or so?

Thanks!

Default .......ENGINE COVER MOD.....

Glad to read this unread thread.
Sure, I painted my cover white.
If I had read this thread before I painted,
I would have cleaned and sanded.
Three years ago, I did several coats of white.
Two years ago, I sprayed it again for a show.
I clean it after a car wash.
You should be good with this MOD.
There are no heat issues with our covers.

I prefer the Rustoleum for plastic. Still cheap. Holds up great.
