Default 205/50/17 I know it sounds crazy but let me explain

Hello scionlife community.
Well to explain I am thinking about getting rims, tires and springs soon. However my folks would really, really rather that I don't lower the car considering that my drive-way is like k2 and my girls drive way is similar to everst lol . We all know that the xb leans like crazy in the twisties and I just can't stand it anymore so i got to thinking of how i could get away with installing springs for sole benefit of handling as I don't care for lowing the ride height. So I was thinking if i get a tire that has an overall diameter that is an inch larger my ride height would only change about half and inch, assuming i get the trd springs. So here are my questions.

One, will this tire size fit on an xb with trd springs?

Two, if anyone has this tire size can you please post some pictures?

And finaly, is it possible for the dealer to adust my ECU to the new tire size I know on trucks tuners this is an option so i was wondering if it was built into our ecu.

Thank you.

i suspect that your bigger sidewall will reduce the minor handling benefits of the springs. I don't like the idea. i also wouldn't recommend jacking with the ecu.

If you're not going to lower the car much, i think your suspension wins would be in the order of front/rear tower braces, 25mm progress rear sway, trd underbody brace etc. stiffening up the car will reduce the roll.

as hotbox said, the springs you'd want to look at are like the trds or eibachs.

an inch is _not_ that much, really. I'm sure you have clearance, and if not, you could make it. my driveway is pretty unforgiving, but i've put a piece of wood down in the lowest spot on the gutter, water can still get thru, and i don't scrape. lot of people use gravel, too, but it doesn't stay put real well.

Sounds like you haven't installed the Progress/ TRD/ Whiteline rear swaybar... My xB corners like a slotcar with the Progress bar, understeer vastly reduced, and it's an easy, invisible install... Any effect on the ride has been negligible to non-existent...

Easily the best handling investment out there... and it'll still work fine if you decide to use lowering springs, anyway...

The larger tire diameter will adversely affect acceleration, too...

The TRD springs will give you an inch of drop which is a nice medium. Springs do very little in the handling dept. so brand is less important than the amount of drop you want. Get the front strut bar and the rear sway bar (Whiteline, TRD or Progress) You will likey much! Then add the front urethane end-link bushings to the stock front bar and you will be set unless you want a smoother ride out back. Then you would need to change out the rear shocks for some Monroe #5987s.
You can go 215/40 or 205/45 in 17" without any problems and still get a decent ride with no rubbing and the speedo will read more accurate than with the stock tires.
This is a well proven combination that has the best of both worlds.

adding my .02 as well...
If you are bent on having a larger sidewall, I would stick with 45 series if you are going with 17" wheels. They have a good sidewall for corners and still "give" a little for bumps OEM manufactures have been using the same setup so you know if it makes normal people happy it's a good way to go.. Downside is the 45's will cost more than the usally 40 series..if you plan on lowering at all a larger 50 might run into clearance issues when turning full lock..also like was mentioned the rear sway will help greatly stay off swapping in a front bar unless needed. And if you need a scangauge for the speedo stuff hit me up!

Read that again, insert "TRD" where it says "Progress" and sign my name to the bottom of it!

Indigo.

Did you end up riding with the 205/50/17s? if so, Did they rub at all during turns? Also, how much of a drop did you end up doing and what offset are you running?

If you thought you were nuts doing that size, I want to do 215/55/17.

You guys keep going taller in your sidewalls and eventually your going to run into problems.

The largest i have seen on a box in the flesh on a 17" wheel is a 215/45R17. I have run that size on 3 different sets of wheels now and no real issues to talk about. I have hit many a pothole and sh*t in the road and not once have i damaged a wheel.

If your looking for a minimal drop, look into the TeinH-Techs. They drop only about an inch. I intially had those then went over to Progress and love the Progress set up. My GF loves the ride in my box so much that she is going Progress too and getting rid of the GoldLines she has had for over a year now.

in toyota's there's no way to adjust the ecu for tire size changes

heck i run 215/40/17's on a 4 inch drop and have yet to damage a wheel.
