Horn Install (Hella Supertone)
A relay would prevent the horns drawing too much current through the stock wiring harness. Similar when switching to HID. The headlight leads are such a small gauge that the initial start up draw from the HID ballast will eventually burn through the wiring insulation. As far as the horns go the stock wiring should be fine unless you switched over to an air horn setup with a high current pump.
I used stock Harley Softail horns on my tC without issue. The gauge of wire HD uses is actually smaller than on the tC, so I didn't install a relay. I was going to go with some "land yacht" style horns from the 70's or so, but I have always liked how the horn sounds on my Softail.

i used this thread to help install super loud air horns on my tC--

DO hella horns really need a relay or no? will not using it cause the stock harness to burn or no ? are they plug and play?

^ the answer is it depends. people have posted that they got it working w/o a relay.... but others say that you should use a relay so you dont fry anything on the cars stock wiring harness.
for my hellas, i used a relay. in fact, since i have two sets of hella horns, i used TWO relays. overkill? maybe. but at least if poop hits the fan, i will only burn out a $5 relay and not some hundred dollar+ part on the cars wiring harness.
so the answer is it depends. personally, if i had to do it again, i would still go the relay route. you have less to worry about that way.

they have been holding up very well for me. the screws on the horns have some surface rust on them but aside from that, they've been holding up really nicely...
the other day, i was considering getting a louder horn and replacing my current ones.. just for the hell of it... LOL.... i would go for the stiebel nautilius horns....
but i know myself. i'd probably get 4 of them. :-D

I'm still having a bit of trouble figuring out how to wire this sucker up. This image is the stock horn relay circuit. Can someone draw in how to wire the relay that comes with the horn? I'm much better at electrical diagrams than I am at photos of installed horns.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I'll elaborate a little on where I am confused, hopefully that will help clear things up.
In the OP it says relay point 86 is positive from horn harness. Point 87 is positive hella horn terminal. OP also says "tap one of the horn harness(which is a positive trigger) for the relay." I'm assuming this is what connects to pin 86 on the Hella relay. But that same wire IS plugged in to the positive terminal on the Hella horn (unless I'm missing something), so in my reading it says tap the positive lead to the horn, and run that to pins 86 and 87 on the Hella relay. Is that correct?
This is why diagrams are easier. No ambiguity.
