Default Manual Steering Rack Swap

I just wanted a place to document a few things as i previously had several write-ups on Scikotics but that forum has disappeared. I do not suggest this unless you are prepared for a work out while driving the car.

Below are the parts needed to replace the power steering components and rack on your 1st Gen TC. I am not going to list all of the steps, I will list only the parts needed since i believe if you are attempting this you should have a good mechanical understanding of the car and can sort the install out.

You will need the parts below. The rack can be sourced from LKQ for rather cheap and the rest of the parts can be found on amazon and/or eBay.
Part Desc. Part Number
Pulley Sub-assembly 16603-28050
Bracket, Idler pulley 16631-28031
Idler Pulley Bolt
No A/c Rav 4 belt 90916-02597 (Alt Part number Dayco 5070625 )
Use stock belt if you are keeping the A/C
Prius Steering rack 17in (16.4:1) 45510-47021
Prius Intermediate Shaft 45221-47041

Engine Components
  • Remove serpentine belt, power steering pump, and lines.
  • Install the idler pulley and bracket and then replace with the serpentine belt you took off your car (use listed one above if removing A/C)
  • Remove Power the steering rack and replace with Prius Manual rack. It is a direct bolt on with listed parts.

I wonder if you can pair this with a Prius power (motorized) steering column.
