Chat room

Hmmmmmmm... Have you kept up with your software updates, Sam? The ability to group chat was a fairly recent addition IIRC...
I don't THINK there are any preferences that need to change, but you might want to go through them anyway to check for sanity.

yeah, I always do the updates when they pop up. I was just being impatient, it takes a little to get in the room.

sometimes it doesn't come up right away for me either, just keep trying and be patient.
hehe I always say something like that just to see what reaction i get.

OK, so I downloaded AIM...I still can't get chat working for me. Any hints, clues, suggestions? Could somebody provide a very simple "how to" ? Thanks.

I am considering improving the chat features on this site... but in the meantime we will just have to live with AOL's chat.
As a side-note I added GoogleTalk to the profile options, so if you have a GoogleTalk account you can go to your profile and add your information.
Bump -- this is still on the drawing board

OK, I checked out the newbeetle.com chat and discovered it was an IRC-based chat using a Java plugin. I have used those in the past and found that they can confuse some newbies and also that the Java plugin will not load behind certain firewalls.
In order to improve our current AIM chat system I think that a Flash-based chat program is necessary... that way anyone can participate regardless of their IM preferences or current physical location.
I am opening this thread to anyone that can find and nominate a Flash chat script that I can integrate inexpensively and easily. It must be easy to use and easy to match to the site's look and feel. It must also have admin options where we can silence all, and only allow pre-approved people to speak (for moderated topics with special guests, etc)
Also, I think that we ought to put together a schedule of times and days for specific topics. Like... Monday at 4PM we will discuss warranty issues, Tuesday at 4PM we will discuss suspension, etc. I am open to suggestions for this schedule as well.

123FlashChat Looks promising.... Plus, source code is available...so it can be adapted to fit our lovely Scionlife world...
What do you consider pricey... it looks like around 2 grand for a feature filled version w/ source code...

Yeah, $2000 for a chat is WAY on the pricey side... I was thinking more around a $100 maximum. Free is preferable!

Hehe.... That's as much as I've spent on my tC in like the last 2 months...per month.... ugh... should invest it here.
Bummer.... that looked sweet.

All I suggest is to make certain that whatever Flash chat you choose is usable on all the current platforms. (I'm tired of running into things on websites that are "non-standards compliant" to the extent that the only way to use them is to pay William Henry Gates, III a bunch of money.)

Parachat is another Java embedded application, which will get blocked by a number of networks and systems... we can't have Java, it should be Flash or HTML based so everyone can use it.

I like the sweetphp one.... I will put it in my to-do list, but not a very high priority.
