Default Belt tensioner problem: Bolt brokeoff in block!

So here is the problem, the bolt that held in the belt tensioner (as pictured), the head broke off and the bolt is now in the engine block. This needs to be tapped out obviously and i am not sure if the damper is still good or not as well.

The car would run rough and i found out now that that broke, that it was the problem.

So my question is:

If i replace this part, would it be best to get a Gates, Dayco, or ACDelco?

How much would it be to have it done by the dealer?

Any ideas if i do it my self? I know i would have to cut a hole in the wheel well if i dont drop the motor.

And does that bolt have a part number?[img][/img]

the tensioner was a problem on the camry and tC. It had issues and a lot were replaced under warranty. So I'm not surprised yours died.

I think they fixed the tensioner now with a new updated part.

You also DONT have to cut a hole in the wheel well. That plastic shroud piece comes off to access the drivebelt/tensioner area. it's just held on by plastic clips.

www.trdsparks.com would be your best source for help. Ken has helped a lot of us! (it's a toyota dealer who has good wholesale prices)

Mich,

I did access that area going thru the wheel, but since the bolt broke off in the engine block, a hole mite need to be drilled to get a straight shoot that the upper bolt to tap it out.

ow could i check to see if the tensioner is bad?

you'd need a tension gauge to pull on the tensioner, those specs would be inside the service manual. napa might be able to help you.

reading the service manual all I can find so far is the removal of the drivebelt, and it's saying to use a SST (special service tool) to remove the tension from the tensioner and then using it to apply it slowly back to not damage the tensioner. Here is a quote
"loosen the V–ribbed belt tensioner arm clockwise, then remove the fan and generator V belt. SST 09249–63010" the SST is the tool part number.

The installation of the drivebelt is here
"3. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
(a) Using SST, loosen the V–ribbed belt tensioner arm clockwise, then install the fan and generator V belt.
SST 09249–63010
NOTICE:
Be sure to connect SST and the tools so that they are inline when using.
When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly in 3 second or more. Be sure to not apply
force rapidly.
After the tensioner is retracted all the way, do not apply force any more than necessary.
4. INSTALL FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH"

But no where does it say what the tension on the tensioner should be, you could test it with a tension gauge but what good is that if I can't find the spec?

All I can find is this quote
"INSTALL V–RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSY
(a) Install the V–ribbed belt tensioner with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 59.5 NVm (607 kgf/cm, 44 ft/lbf)"

and top bolt sheared off? that's the 44ft/lbf spec, there is another stud that is on the lower end of the tensioner, did that shear? or just the top bolt? because the spec for that stud isn't 44ft/lbf

hope that helps, you could also contact Ken at www.trdsparks.com and he might be able to tell you what the tension would be because I can't find it in the service manual.
