The hints from a few weeks ago that Toyota would be bringing the tiny iQ to the U.S. with a Scion badge are looking more and more like the truth. AutoblogGreen reader Mark F. got an email from his local Scion dealer, Bill Kidd's in Maryland, that describes "The Future of Scion." The full update on the Scion brand reads as follows:
Scion is recognized world wide for their distinctive and customizable models, with the dependability of a Toyota product. Recently, the Scion xD was recognized by Consumer Reports as the #1 reliable new car with 80% less problems than the average model. Scion remains committed to bringing Gen Y buyers a unique, yet affordable vehicle, and 2010 is sure to be the biggest year yet. The highly anticipated, newly redesigned tC will be released, as well as an all new vehicle: The Scion IQ. As the smallest, most fuel efficient Scion, it's sure to turn heads. Stay tuned!
Nothing new there, but hearing from a dealer that the Scion iQ is on the way in 2010 is about at much confirmation as we're likely to get right now, isn't it?

what are you talking about? the vehicle industry is all about the mpg battle now...and if this gets the proposed amount...as well as going looks wise against the smart fortwo...this will make a killing...toyota/scion would make a huge name for themselves with this car...and besides....just because you drive a tc doesn't mean you're gonna get flamed for having a scion if they have one of these little mpg masters under their belt...
and look at the bright side...get one...gut it....throw a busa 1300 under there and you got a lot better looking iQ devil....the smart devil just doesn't have the looks....they're ugly....this is actually stylish...

They would have to price this pretty low...near 10,000, I would think. After all, it would have to be a lower price point than the already cheap Yaris, at 2009 price of 12,205.
Maybe half the price of the 5-door Yaris hatchback?

Um...doubt?
If we're honest with ourselves, the vehicle most closely associated with Scion is the Gen 1 xB. Scion knows this - look at how prominently it features in the Scion United commercial, even though they're whoring out a car they exectued. So if you haven't already taken sh!t for being the cousin of a mutant toaster, I wouldn't worry about the iQ.
In my opinion, bringing the iQ stateside as a Scion is about all Toyota could do to save Scion after the porked-out xB2 and stale, un-refreshed tC have nearly killed the brand.
Ironically, you're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT - the average fat, old, boring, SUV-obsessed American will shun the iQ, and Scion with it...leaving our brand alone for the edgy and smart people. Exactly like it was originally, and exactly like it should be.
If you want so desperately to be mainstream: for your next car, might I suggest a Corolla?

Actually, the name is one of the best parts. It's "iQ", as in intelligence quotient. A total slam on the "Smart" car. To keep it in line with the rest of the Scions, the first letter is lower case...
The Smart had so many opportunities that they totally missed out on. I hope the iQ takes advantage...price point, stellar MPG. The Smart is really expensive, and the gas mileage is only ok. Done right, the iQ will KILL!

I'd hope they keep the iQ name for the US for Scion. Scion is supposed to be edgy and anti-corporate so are they going with a corporate naming scheme? I also don't like the idea of a corporate face with the xB and the tC now using the same grill. Scion's products need to be distinct from most other things on the market and from each other.

So.... yeah I'd pay an extra thousand or 2 for an extra 30 MPG over the yaris.
Step in the right direction for Scion
Now just re-badge the fuse to a tC.

I'm already getting prepared to not give a crap when I get twice the gas mileage as everyone else.
And yes, just make this a two-seater with space in the back. There's absolutely no way you could fit four people in this thing AND have cargo space. Plus, I don't have enough friends to warrant having a car that comfortably fits four people... that's why I have a tC. :)
Toyota has yet to disclose full specifications, but says the iQ will initially offer a choice of two gasoline engines, likely a 3- and 4-cylinder, and a small diesel. A gas/electric option a la Toyota’s Prius hybrid is expected around 2010 or ’11. For the U.S., however, a 2010 Toyota iQ would likely use the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine that powers Toyota’s larger Yaris subcompact, if only because the two models have similar-size engine bays.
I started commenting on this with a lot of profanity and the words "no" and "diesel" everywhere, but then I actually went and did some reading on the interweb. Shocking and unprecedented, I know, but follow me here:
They're giving us the NZ engine. Cool, it's not thirsty and it's cheap. BUT that also means they can also go from the FE spec to the FXE spec and give us a hybrid trim iQ rather easily. If my maths are correct, the FE could get around 40mpg, but the FXE could get around 60mpg... which is exactly the same mileage they're saying the ND engine will get over in Europe. I'd still like the ND to come over here, but I'll be satisfied if they give me a 1NZ-FXE that gets comparable gas mileage.
Also, reading a little more on the internet/Wikipedia and doing some number crunching, I would be surprised if this cost over $11k or $12k for us.

Yes, except that "3+1" isn't accurate either. If the rear seat is so cramped that only a child can sit behind the driver, the front passenger has to move the seat up to the point that their knees are hard against the dashboard to make enough room for a rear passenger with legs.
Perhaps they should make it "2+2 double amputees"

Um, what? The Toyota bB is what the Scion xB is based on. Started life in Japan in 2000, and they brought it over as a Scion xB in 2004.
The first Nissan Cube was born in 1998.

They should stick some Scion badges on it and call it the new xA.
Make the Scion line up a 4 car show.

Well as long as the interior is not turd brown.
I also noticed it does not have a cruise control stalk... Very annoying. I want it as a commuter as I drive about 100 freeway miles a day, has to have cruise.

Garage1217

Agreed, heck they did not give the yaris cruise either and it is a commuter. They offered a crappy aftermarket unit for it. One of the reasons I like the XD so much, tons of features.
CDogbert

Agreed, heck they did not give the yaris cruise either and it is a commuter.
 I didn't know that. What argument could they possibly have in not even offering cruise control as an option? It's not like it's expensive or complicated anymore.
Garage1217
11-10-2008, 03:40 PM
Yeah was one of my turning points in going away from the yaris. After you added in power windows and locks / cruise control. I was at the same price of the XD new with those options already included. Plus the XD had the much better motor "same engine as the yaris sport overseas" more room blah blah. Was a no brainer.
And yeah totally cheap to implement. It is apart of the drive by wire BS now, not even cable actuated. Just built into the electronics / servo system.
I really hope they bring over the D4D turbo diesel option. I drove a yaris with that setup in France and it was a blast compared to the 1.5L turd. & got better fuel economy!
CDogbert
11-10-2008, 03:51 PM
The only thing I can think of as to why they don't give us the D4D is because diesel for cars (for whatever reason) has never taken off here. I think the automakers are just content with letting VW have the tiny share of people who want these.
We have hardons more for hybrids than for diesel, so giving us the NZ kinda makes more sense, anyway.

The other reason is that American Diesel fuel content is not as tightly-controlled as European Diesel fuel. Manufacturers who designed their engines strictly for Euro-Diesel don't want the reliability issues that will come up if the cars are run on US diesel. VW does a lot of business in central and south America so they found it profitable to accommodate the diesel fuels available there.
Garage1217
11-10-2008, 06:51 PM
On another note...
The 1.0L is an optin
The 1.5L is an option
The D4D is an option...
This means technically the new workhorse 2zr-fe 1.8L from the XD or Yaris sport would possibly fit this car. The 1.8L is fun in the 2600lb XD, Is a little more zippy in the 2400lb yaris sport overseas so should be a blast in the 2000lb IQ and still net mid 40's MPG wise. WOOT!

The tC was the only car designed for Americans, the others were orginally Japanese. Seems to me that the only car not fitting the Scion lineup is the tC. I say drop the tC and bring back the Celica or the Supra instead, or the fuse.

the box i like too. the first gen box. the xa i like. the xd i like also, the dash isn't in the center. points in my book. the xa i like more, so if it had xd interior i'd like it best of these three. coupe tc still wins out of all them. :)
...fuse is differant. hako is oddddd.

Stupid tC. Yes, I own one, and yes, I love it, and yes, I'd buy it again, but STUPID TC!! if it hadn't been so successful, in both reviews and sales #s, Scion probably would've left well enough alone and just given us the new bB and all would've been well. Instead Scion said "see, we designed a vehicle for American tastes and it sells better than the ones we imported from Japan. Lets 'Americanize' all of our future vehicles..."
As for the iQ, I think it's an excellent, excellent car... for my wife. If it's the right price it'll probably go on the list of cars to check out when her current car dies (Ford Focus, shouldn't take too long, lol) along with the Cube, Soul, etc. So you can put this tC owner into a different category than the others, as someone who likes and appreciates what this car will do for the brand. I'm looking at other vehicles for myself, but if this is priced right it will reinvigorate the brand and make my wife happy she doesn't have to buy an expensive, not-that-efficient Smart Car...

dont be so petty, just because a few people disagree with you or you just dont like them/us, doesnt mean you should kill the car from the brand.
tC is way better than the Celica, Supra is in a different class. I say make mild adjustments to the tC, offer 2.4(or 3.0 if they could haha) v6 and switch to RWD with mild price increase. i call mild bumped up to $20k. as far as interior goes, the tC has the best interior of any toyota in my honest opinion, though the solara may be more luxury oriented and the xB has its own cool features as well.
iQ is a good move for the brand, but the whole use of the word iQ disgusts me, just like "smart car" there is nothing smart about a smart car. (no offense)
i think its interesting that there is STILL no REAL competition to the prius (as much as that pains me to say, not a fan of the prius)

I love the looks of the tC. I love to have one if i didn't hate the way it drove when i test drove one(was a used one BTW). It's probily one of the best looking cars for under $17,000. I did say that it does not fit in the line-up if you take a step back and look at the whole picture. Scion started out as a brand that brings small, funky looking, fuel efficient, and inexpensive cars to the USA, the tC is none of those.

in the sense it doesnt fit in your absolutely right, its not all that efficient or small or really all that "funky"compared to the xB/xA/xD. but you did say drop the tC. in any case i think its good for scion to try and be more diverse. speaking of which, is it just me or did toyota totally make the scion designers its _____? lol the matrix (i think thats the one) looks shockingly similar to the xA in my opinion (outside at least)
you really didnt like the handling? i love the handling in mine and i dont even have the sway bar or coilovers in yet. maybe its just a preference thing

i just looked up the smart car, and i have to say holy ____ that is the biggest ripoff i've ever seen in my life, it is slow, super tiny, no really great interior features and heres the price:
$11,590 - $16,590 so this begs the question, WTF mate? sure its a division of mercedes but since when is a car with an interior/exterior that is no more interesting or stylish than a wet carrot. and the "convertible version" cost as much as a manual 2009 scion tC!
so for roughly $15k you get 1.0L I3 71HP 33/41 mpg
the convertible is $17,430 (local dealership)

the Celica IS coming back....for Japan only as a restyled tC fools! I looked at a japanese review of the iQ. there was a pic of a guy sitting in the backseat with a woman driving and his knees were in his chest. can't even fit a shopping bag in the back with the rear seats up. what a waste. Scion is headed for the wrong demographics. I tell ya, no kid would want this car. you gotta have yer beats...no room for beats in the iQ. and the Smart? at least you can order different panels and change them out if you get tired of the color of the car.
its difficult to tell, the first one is supposed to be called the FT-HS which is to be the new supra and the second is the new celica.
neither of which look like a tC to me, but there is no news as to what is coming to the US if anything. and if anything does come it will probably be under a scion badge as a higher end scion.

note - if you're looking for a car to sit 4 adults and a weeks worth of luggage, you're looking at the wrong car. for this car, the rear seats are probably going to spend 99% of their time either folded flat (or removed? not sure how they work) leaving plenty of room. on that rare night where you pull Designated Driver duty, you've got the small jump-seats to haul your friends home from the bar.
looks perfect to me (who hasn't used his rear seats for anything other than the "conversation seating" in probably 2 years).

Power to weight and displacement, uber-tiny motor, super lightweight, 1300cc and easily buildable to 700+ HP, but thats just my opinion. And they are extremely efficient, you are mistaking inefficient for unreliable - they dont have to reverse direction multiple times make power, but the rotor apex seals are not the most durable items in a motor design.

We're talking about an economy car here. The kind used primarily for commuting. Take a K20A and compare it to a turbo 13B. The K20A easily makes 200hp, the turbo 13B makes about 240hp. The weight difference would probably be in favor for the K20A, considering the 13B would have tons of extra weight from all the turbo components. Now let's look at gas mileage, the #1 reason for this car. The K20A would be capable of getting 28-32 MPG, probably more. The 13B...15? 16?
Take a step back and look at the car you're talking about, you'll realize that the idea of a Rotary engine is just plain stupid.
How would it be better? Rotary engines are extremely inefficient. Mazda is the only company that stands behind the Rotary theory, and they're barely using it.
Oh yea, and 13B's aren't "easily buildable to 700+HP". The 20B is one that used in almost all of those 700+ HP applications.
And if you're going to call someone out on spelling, I suggest you learn how to use an apostrophe.

my mistake on putting the Y in rotaries. just a typo genius. And are 13B's really 1300cc's? that's been subject of debate for a long time since there are no cylinders. But whatever Wiki says must be right. the internet is always right.

I'm trying to make the car fun, not economical, the same way the Smart got the Hayabusa engine and made it a little rocket.
EDIT: And before you start guessing you might want to check your facts, the 13B is a more reliable platform than the 20B and they have been built to over 900hp. One of my mechanics did sidework at a buggy shop in OC that cranked out monster horsepower from 13B powerplants
well, rotaries are an interesting engine nonetheless.

Off the subject of power, and onto the safety issue.....whats the guarantee that if you get hit in the IQ that you will live...without severe permanent disabilities?
I rode in a SMART car, took me a tenth of a second after nearly getting ___ ended by a Tahoe, to say f@ck this!

No guarantee at all. Neither is there a guarantee in any other Scion or, for that matter, a Hummer. It all depends upon the luck of what you hit and how you hit it.
I've been in situations where I've avoided an accident because of the nimble steering of a small car. If I had been in a larger vehicle it would have been nasty.
This "I'm safe because I'm protected by tons of metal" mentality is why we have to deal with idiots driving huge vehicles badly. Big does not equal safe.

I visited checker flag smart in va beach a few weeks ago. Having riden and owning a geo metro, its great. You sit higher, its more beef around, plus you can turn sharper with more power. The metro you just get squished since its soo low.
My only concern is getting ping pongged out of traffic in a pile up and just bouncing around like you are in one of those hugh inflatable balls rolling along the country side of europe.

Screw it, you only live once. I refuse to let the idiotic SUV-lovin' American populace determine what I drive.

SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont like the flat front of the smart, makes it look high center. Likely to pitch forward during a crash.
EDIT: All snap, look at all the you tube videos regarding the iq!!!!

I just want to say anybody who is complaining about performance in this car is missing the boat. This is a economy around town car. If you want performance buy a sports car. sheesh! BTW I think the scion IQ concept car looks like a hermit crab.

VIP IQ-who would have thought?
Smart is rear engine-under the deck behind the seats.
The bodykitted ones look nice (tha axis show model) but in person they are going to have to looks somewhat cartoonish with big flares and lips-personally I think that is the coolest part-they don't look like the usual cars (like the camry, accord, sonata, etc family)
