Why no telescopic steering wheel in new Scion xB?
First off, I'm not a troll and do not own a Scion xB, but I'm going to rant a bit.
I'll get right to the point, a message for Scion - I would never buy the Scion xB for one, singular reason - the 2009+ Scion xB has no telescopic steering wheel.
I'm 6'2" tall (really). I like generous seating and legroom in a car, but I do not like reaching and stiff-arming to use a steering wheel.
The all-new Scion xB driver's seat is generous in terms of room, height adjust and all. But the execution is blown without the steering wheel pulling towards the driver.
My message is this - Scion / Toyota - please terminate, eliminate, fire, layoff, whatever any employees that make design desicions like this. You can find ways to cut costs other ways, but do not screw the driver, the one who pays for a vehicle and will obviously be driving the vehicle.
With this singular feature, this car would be at the top of my list.
What a shame.

Don't worry, I've been whining about it since I got my tC in 2005. No idea why it was not included in the new xB, but it should have been in the tC from the start too. I'm OK and comfortable where I'm at - but telescoping would make it that much better.
It's all about cutting costs. But to cut costs and ruin the seating for really tall driver's just leaves me shaking my head.
I want every option in my car, but only wanna pay 16k.... its what i always read on here.. if they put every option ever mentioned on here people wanted,, the car would be a ton more money.. and then that would be the whine we would hear,, its overpriced....
big deal man...many people are taller than 6'2", including myself, and don't have a problem driving in the xB2....like they said above me....you can't expect to drive a vehicle priced at ~16k and have all those features....even if they were optional, it's not like the dealer installing a navi...
I'm about 5'10", but the xB steering wheel position is still "wrong" compared to what I'm used to. However, if instead of positioning my hands at 10pm and 2am, I drop down near the bottom of the wheel (more relaxed) -- it works just fine. More cruiser style? In any case, it works at the price point.

I'm 6'4 and I had no problems with the seating position in the xB2. The car has more than enough headroom and legroom that you shouldn't need to recline the seat to the point that you can't reach the wheel. The only thing a telescoping wheel would introduce, is more gangsta leaning retards.
I remember Road and Track and Car and Driver's reviewers lauding the xB2s, spaciousness, cargo capacity, standard accessories, power, etc., but to a man, they lamented the driving position. Being 6' 2" myself, I can say that it took some time to find an optimum seat angle/distance setting, but I'm still not totally comfortable with it. The wheel just doesn't come out far enough for me to get a little recline in my position. Even with the well used seats on my '86 Camry, the driving position was more comfortable. Scion should have put it in there. Heck, it's standard on the Matrix.

Who on the planet could add telescoping to a tilt steering wheel? Impossible.
If a tall person sits in a car, slides the driver's seat fully back, cranks the seat down low, and the steering wheel is about above their knees, there in for straight arming to reach the steering wheel. How awkward is that?
What could one ever do to get that steering wheel closer?
One can add a better sound system, put in navigation, backup camera and lots of other stuff.
One cannot in any way add a telescopic steering wheel. That's why it must be added by the manufacturer.
The xB is a roomy car inside. It needs to fit big and tall people.
btw, I hope this post is read by Scion insiders for feedback to design teams.
Seriously, there are some options many can do without, then add later.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a telescoping steering wheel, but "eh".... I'm fine without it. I'm 5'11" (mostly leg... LoL) and am totally comfortable in the drivers seat with how the steering wheel is.
They didn't. Tall people used to get down on all fours and run everywhere.
x2 They'd want to have nicer materials and seat upholstery. By then the xB would lose the Scion badge and become a Toyota. I'm the target age group and this car is perfect for me.
LOL I'm also the perfect height group at 5'10"!!!

Really if you look at it, the xB comes standard with the options that most people consider "standard" in modern vehicles: power windows/locks, A/C. I don't think telescopic steering has reached "standard" status yet. The only car I've driven in that had telescoping steering was our '04 Sienna XLE Limited. I've driven a car that didn't even have tilting steering, some Kia compact jobber. Scion is targeting younger generations, who probably don't care so much about telescoping steering as a nice factory stereo (which really probably doesn't cost much more than the factory stereo out say, the Corolla).
2) 2006 and later Honda Civic ... telescopic wheel. Civic DX's, well under $20k.
3) Mazda 3 - all standard telescopic wheel since 2004.
It is becoming standard in most, except for lowest end compacts.
I'm 6'5'' and I was worried about the lack of telescopic wheel at the auto show, but the legroom could not be beat. Its virtually the only car that my knees don't touch the dash with the seat all the way back.
I bought the car on Tuesday, and after a couple days of driving it (I drive for work, already 200 miles) I will say that the telescopic wheel is not needed. I'm comfortable in it now.
My last car was a Chrysler Concorde with the leather interior. That thing was super comfortable. But that was a "luxury" car, and I drove it for 3 years, so I was totally used to it.
I am confident that I will adjust fully to my new seating position quickly.
P.S. I really miss my lumbar adjustment too....Oh well....
