F%^& THIS PROJECT UNLESS YOU ARE PAINTING THE SPOKES ONLY!!! OTHERWISE YOU ARE IN FOR A MAJOR FREAKING ORDEAL! Unless you are a skilled painter with painting experience leave this job to the pros. Please let me explain.
Powder coating cost for high gloss black powder coat rim.
$18.50 per rim for tire removal, remount, and balance (Walmart Auto.)
$55.00 per rim for sandblasting, and powder coating (Local Powder Coater)
Total Cost $294.00 plus tax
Total Time 1 day if well planned
Total Time you busting your a** sanding, taping, priming, sanding, taping, painting, opps one rim doesn't look good, try to remove paint by sanding, doesn't work, try to remove paint with aircraft remover, total cluster, now decide to have them powder coated = 0 freakin nightmarish hours.
IF YOU WANT YOUR WHOLE RIM PAINTED YOU WILL SPEND $200 in paint, primer, sanding stuff, tape, and other materials. Why in God's name would you do that to have your paint start pitting in 6 months or get damaged the first time you replace a tire. FORGET THIS PROJECT.
I spent all weekend sanding, priming, sanding, getting friends to help, and my rims are in worse condition then they were when I started. Obviously I don't have the skill and know how for this project so I'm going to have them powder coated and cut my losses wich are about $123.00 after I get a refund for the unused materials. This project can only be accomplish properly by a skilled individual, and even then it takes at least three day sun up to sun down. These rims are a major b**ch to sand, and if you read up you will see that even the guy who wrote this diy had to redo his rims. SAVE YOURSELF THE HORRIBLE HASSLE AND HAVE THEM POWDER COATED. While your rims are in the shop paint your calipers. That's a doable project that will take about a day to do properly.
Thanks for reading my rant. I hope you make a better call on this then I did.

The drop is hotchkis and the springs have about 12k on stock shocks. I think the reason it looks lower is because I am on 225/45/17 tires. No I have never had any rubbing issues what so ever.
Yes in the pics they may "resemble" the spare but, in reality the pics really lightened up the paint color and they are a bit darker.

Hey guys it's me, the author of the thread. Well I sold my tC more than a year ago and I haven't been on here since then.
If you guys have q's or anything the best way to get a hold of me is via email:

and just put "painting scion wheels" or something similar in the subject line so it doesn't go to my junk folder.

i just did my stock rims today and i say shell out the effing money for powder coating! i was too cheap and now im suffering! the rims actually came out pretty decent i must say. but effing the SANDING omg. i redid a few parts to 3 of the rims. :x one still has tiny silver spots but i could care less now! you can only see them if you get really close up. it took me 6 hours to do them. i had a friend help me with the sanding and my dad had to put the wheels back on the car for us because we were too weak. im 20 and i have some serious back pain after this! oh and if you still want to try this after my rant, i HIGHLY suggest using index cars instead of taping everthing like everyone else!!! but thats only if you are painting your rims all one color.

Hey Rogue: If you want, since you're in Maryland we could meet up since I'm in Quantico, VA & I'd be more than happy to assist you with this project. PM me if you are interested. Everyone listen to me, the author of this thread said that you need only need "5 sheets of 400 grit sand paper", I highly recommend you get a whole lot more than that. Cause even though I did enough sanding I went on ahead & said to myself "Do some more sanding" even though it was enough. Cause you can never be too safe. Make sure when you get all of your supplies from Auto Zone & no where else & that the paint is "Dupli-Color High Heat Engine Paint" do not , I repeat, do not get nothing else other than this paint.
Have fun & be extremely patient.
I started @ 7 in the morning & finished @ 3 pm so this project is time consuming. This is one custom project that I am proud of doing. I have gotten so many compliments people asking me "Did you get new rims"? I'm like "Nope, I painted them all to myself & with help from a buddy of mine".
The reaction on people's faces are so surprised they're like "No way, it looks like you got new rims or paid someone to do them."
I don't mean to ramble on, just follow the instructions & be patient. Let me know, if anyone has questions, I'm on this website alot.
Keep the thread going.
Peace ya'll

Hey, I did one rim and i decided that the paint isn't very durable, and want to powdercoat.
My dad used to be an accountant at a powder-coating facility and said there are different methods & paints, what would be recommended for stock wheels in Wisconsin weather?
What kind of prep work do I have to do? Sand off the paint that I just put on?

damn!!! i worked on my wheels for 7 hours today after work, and only managed to get two of them done! def. very time consuming but the ones that are done were well worth it.
Sorry for the double post but, do i really need 2 jackstands or i can i just do it with the jack that comes with the spare tire?
I was thinking to put the tire back while they dry and lift the other side to start with the other tire...will it mess up the paint with the tire back on while drying?
tcbabe
12-20-2008, 10:56 PM
well, its really handy to have a spare set of wheels for the few days that this takes, but if you don't have that luxury, i highly suggest using jackstands w/ the amount of time it takes. even if you only have one, it would work...you could just jack up the one side and put the spare on, and put the jack on the other side...then take those two wheels and paint them.
so yeah, i think jackstands are the way to go if you dont have an extra set of wheels...not that expensive either if you don't have any...

I finished doing mine a couple of weeks ago. I think they turned out pretty good, but I did mine a bit differently than I've seen anyone else do them on here. I painted the entire rim, except for a thin strip (about 1/4") around the border. In order to do that, I had to do a lot of masking, then cut the masking tape around the border of the wheel with an Exacto blade.
WORD OF WARNING: if you've never heard before, you can actually lose some of the feeling in the tip of your finger if you spraypaint too long. This happened to me, and it's been almost two weeks, and I still have a numb spot on the tip of my index finger (the one I sprayed with). I recommend getting one of those spray can attachments that makes the can spray like a spray gun (i.e. a trigger) instead of having to push down on the top. The extra few bucks are worth the feeling in your dominant hand's pointer finger, if you ask me.
Also, if you take the wheel to get it balanced after you paint it, be sure they don't get any cleaning solvent on the paint. The shop I went to used a solvent to clean the wheel in the place where they were going to attach the stick-on wheel weight, and some dripped onto the face of the wheel. I had to re-sand and re-spray that portion of the wheel, which was a royal pain (took 3 more tries, actually).
Here are some pics. Enjoy!
This is how I had the wheels masked off:
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t131/wradar/2008%20Scion%20tC/IMG_0930.jpg
I tried to mask off the Scion logo on the caps and spray them seperately, but the paint came up with the masking tape in several little places. It doesn't look too bad from a distance, but you can really tell up-close. (My patch job consisted of a few scribbles with a Sharpie. :P)

great write up. I'm going to do it. Does anyone know if it can be any automotive Duplicolor paint or does it have to be wheel paint?
wRadar

I don't know if it *has* to be wheel paint, but why not use the stuff designed specifically for your wheel? If it's a matter of being able to find it at a store, just make a few calls. WalMart even sells some Duplicolor stuff. I found mine at both Napa and Checkers Auto Parts (aka Kragen, aka Schucks, all three of which were merged with O'Reilly Auto Parts).
Good luck!

Carbon: taken more time masking the wheel, or the cap? They were both masked off just fine, it's when I peeled the masking tape off, the paint stuck to the tape from the cap in a lot of places.

i recently painted my "hub caps" on my 06 XB
thought you all might like to see how it came out
i used a sparkle black/charcoal color and in the sun it really sparkles nice.
took one day, the scion emblem pops off, i cleaned them really well, scratched them up with sand paper. they were already scratched from using chains in the winter months, so painted looks much better than scratched. 2 coats.

Hey guys, just painted my rims on Saturday. Let them sit over night in my garage, and installed them on my car on Sunday. I left my car in the garage since. I'm in NY and it's been pouring here and supposed to keep raining. I'm curious, is it safe to go out yet? I have to drive someone somewheres later tonight but I don't want to mess up my rims because of the rain. It says in the guide that you need to wait at least a week for it to fully cure. Any suggestions or anything

anyone have any experience using the high temp engine enamel made by VHT? I know VHT makes lens paint also and havent heard any complaints about the quality of it. was just wondering if their high temp engine paints are similar in quality as their lens paint. I need to use the high temp engine paint on my wheels because I am in Phoenix and it was a cool 104 here today.......VHT also has a polyurethane wheel gloss clear coat I was thinking of using also.
